I went through about a dozen good opportunities to break 80 and failed every time because I knew where I stood going down the stretch and threw up all over my Footjoys. |

Yeah I went through the same thing. I chili dipped a wedge, had a 5 footer lip out etc before finally breaking 80 for the first time. I'm telling you that was the highlight of my golf "career". The 69/70 I shot back to back was simply a fluke but breaking 80 for the first time was hard earned and well deserved. |

The first day I did it was bittersweet. I was playing well and made it to the match play finals of my flight at my club. The good news is that I stayed focused without thinking about my score and shot 78. The bad news is that I lost the match on the 19th hole. I was two down going into 17 and made a kick in birdie on 17 and made a 10 foot downhiller on 18 to square the match. I then hit my best drive of the day on the playoff hole, but got across a wedge on my approach and pulled it into a bunker. Couldn't get up and down. I didn't even know I broke 80 until I got in the locker room. |

I usually don't turn in handicap scores from match play because of all the "that's good, pick it up". I always try to make it as long as we're not holding anybody up. That is just my personal preference. I can honestly say that I have never sandbagged a shot in my life, although it is more likely I would miss a meaningless putt. |

I was at the range trying to muster some kind of consistency out of my feeble drives...out of the corner of my eye the course pro was helping some guy work on his swing and all I noticed at first was that he was blasting the ball 300 yds plus almost every time. When I was done I picked my stuff and walked past the guy.... he only had one arm. Dang.

Thanks, but I'm not so sure about that. When I finally did it, it was during a match when I was focused on every shot and had no idea where I stood in relation to 80. I had a triple bogey on the front so breaking 80 was not something I thought was in the equation. Played the last 5 holes one under to shoot 78. I've broken 80 many times since, with a low of 75. |
