The selling point of my 7 wood (Callaway Heavenwood) is that it has a high ball flight and lands softly. Also that it glides through rough. I think it's 19 degrees and 41" long.
I don't get why we are debating club length here as loft has more to do with distance than anything. Surely there is a point where less length leads to less distance, but we're talking an inch or so making maybe 5-10 yard difference.

My 3 iron is 39" and 22 degrees. a 3 iron hybrid should be comparable to that. My 7 wood is 41" and 19 degrees.

My point is there's no way a 3 iron hybrid goes as far as a 7 wood.

Would totally agree, you are sacrificing 3 degrees and 2 inches. 2 inches is probably 8-15 yards or so, the difference in degrees is significant as well.

There's a math issue here. Less degree does NOT always equate to more distance these days. The rules have flipped a little bit.

There have been studies that show that if you use a higher loft on your driver with the new technology these days, that it will actually stop further out. This is why you see a lot of pros moving their loft UPWARDS on their drivers.

Beyond that, you're completely discounting spin into the equation.

On the issue of ball flight, I think there's a misconception as to which one goes higher and which goes lower when compared to a fairway wood.

All of which is moot in my case. Even when I *did* carry a set of woods, it was 1,3,5...I've never liked 7. That and my irons are longer than standard, whereas I stick with standard length woods. With only 14 clubs to a bag, there's never been any room for it, regardless.

wrong again, people are moving to higher lofted drivers because the studies and modern gofl are/is showing that some golfers can benefit from the additional control, also with today's weighting in clubs you can move the weights properly the the ball doesn't baloon on you like it did in old days.

That doesn't make sense...if you're tall ok perfect sense your irons are long, but why wouldn't you extend your woods? Most tall players we saw come in had to have the whole bag +1

I agree on not carrying a 7, i've never carried a 5 either..

I'm +1/2. I'm borderline for needing +1 but at that point it puts my posture in such a way that it gives me issues.

The long woods are long enough to where I can just go standard length w/ stiff flex.

Back on topic I'd get a new driver. I've recently bought new irons and a few new drivers. Technology advances have been HUGE in the drivers, not so much IMO with the irons. Now granted new drivers are big bucks but a 1-2 year old model will be a major upgrade for you.

After going through a number of them I bought a Cleveland Launcher and it is by far the easiest driver I've ever hit. As it is a few years old you can get one online, used, for probably $150 or so. Google Used Golf Clubs, there are a million sites. But before doing that go to a shop to let them determine the correct shaft, this is vital. You may think you need a stiff but your swing doctor will determine that.

For the record, I hate the launcher, I literally snapped mine in half and threw it in the water.

Well, for now I've made my purchase. Yesterday before league night I demoed the Heavenwood 4h steel shaft. Loved it.

Took my 3i out of my bag, and had a chance to hit the new club 3 times on the course last night when I would have hit the 3i. Topped it the first time I tried to hit it out of the fairway on 11, rolled about 90 yards and to the right into the woods. Hit it off the tee on 17 and landed on the green at about 205. Hit it on the 18 fairway (I was actually on the fairway on the 9th becuase I wazzed out and thought 9th fairway was 18, but 9/18 are parallel) and I crushed it. Felt much easier to hit than my 5W and light years better than my 3i.

Got it for only $89. So, I can buy another club next month if I want to, but I like my bag right now with 3W, 5W, 4h, 4,5, 6, 7, 8, 9, PW, Lob, Pt.

I was also crushing my 3W drives last night. I was hitting solid 240-260 down the middle. So, didn't miss not having a driver.

If you pure your 3w that far you can add another 20-30 yards with a right fitting driver, makes those 5iron shots wedge shots

I would have paid good American money to have seen that.

It was comical. I got it from the Cleveland rep so it was a free purchase, but that fuckin club drove me nuts. Literally, I was on the back nine one day at the local muni back in Detroit and I just snapped it over my knee and whipped it into the water. Cursing at it the whole way. It was a classic for sure
