It's killin me.

Played golf on friday. Shot ok. 42 on a decently difficult 9 holes (with 5 pars, two 3-putts, and a number of missed 10 foot birdie putts), which is ok for my second round of golf in two years.

Now I've got the itch to play. I just can't afford it with all my payments at the time.

I never fully appreciated being able to play for free in college while on the golf team. I've got to figure out something. Maybe become friends with a head pro.

Get a job at a course.

Audi_z 05-06-2006 11:46 PM

Find a cheap course.

Theres one a few minutes from me and its $24.00 including cart ALL DAY.

Its not the nicest but its challenging. Everything from a 525 yard PAR 5 to a 80 yard PAR 3.

Its better then dropping $60.00 to play with my snobby friends.

Get a job at a local course (1 or 2 days a week) and play for free in your spare time.

I've tried that though. The problem is that everyone wants to get a job at the local course. No courses around here (save for country clubs) have memberships, so everyone wants to play for free instead of paying 45 bucks every time to play.

Talking to a couple people, once you get in working on a course, you don't want to leave.

You love it. You do it.

That's a lot of philosophy right there.

I'm not at the country club level yet, and I'm not sure I want to be. People spend a lot of money on golf. Probably too much. A couple of my friends pay thousands to play at private clubs, but they're located 15-20 miles out of town and don't end up playing 'em that much. One guy said he ended up paying over a hundred dollars a round one year because he only played a dozen or so rounds.

Now, that's just silly. I pay less than $600 a year for a season pass at a local muny and play whenever I want. You don't have anything like that where you play?

I know it's tough to justify big bucks for golf when you're young. After all, it's still a luxury, not a necessity.

I could spend $35,000 initiation and $443 a month to play at the couse I live on... or not.

When I was in HS we would park on a side road across from a local course and jump the fence and play for free. Now we sometimes pay for 9 and pull a crossover and play holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. One day I hope to pull a double crossover and play front and back. Yeah I know I'm a cheap SOB. Its easier to pull on this course too because its a pretty rough one that isn't busy.

Maybe I'll save my pennies.

My Mom & Stepdad belong to a pricey one like that (though not quite that expensive). I can't imagine paying that much for golf or any other sport for that matter.

TPC Wakefield. Its expensive because its a TPC course. Probably not worth the money. Prestonwood on the other hand...

Thats pennies compared to this. I have a couple yards out here. Its $50,000 PER PERSON in your family to join. Then you pay $150 for green fees and an extra $750 per month for "green upkeep".

Where I used to live was Oakland Hills, 100k up front 450/month and you had to spend at least 800 every 6 months....

Great track though

ummmm, yeah. they have only held us opens there.

and umm this one thing about 2 years back. what's it called. oh yeah, the Ryder Cup. yeah, that's pretty big i hear.

I do believe you have to pay extra to play the good course seeing as how there are 2 of them out there.

I actually played it before the Ryder Cup (my girl's dad is a member) and Christ was I humbled. The one thing we all take for granted playing on non-tourney level tracks is the rough. The F'ing rough was beyond my ankles, it was the most brutal round of golf I have ever played. Where I normally play (muni's, country clubs on less of a stature) the rough MAY cause a half to a one club differential...oh no, it was a solid 3 clubs - unreal.

To this day, the rough is still quite thick, I played about three ago and it still sucks when you hit a ball in the rough because a) its hard as fuck to find (it sits down pretty good) and b) its pretty thick.

You mentioned the two courses...for what its the worth the North course is really an amazing golf course in its own right but is tremendously overshadowed by the South.

I've played there many times and the most amazing thing still is to stand one number one where they have the plaques of the winners of all the tourneys and the big green standing clock - you know your playing and standing in the same area as some of the greats.

the north can't hold a candle to the south. hence, it was being used as a parking lot during the ryder cup.
