Par, pretty good, birdie more likely with my third from 100-120 but thats my game. But by hitting driver off the tee and bringing in more trouble, and then hitting a long iron/hybrid/3 wood for your second and bringing in more trouble, and then possibly a tricky short game shot, you've brought bogey or higher really into play. If I hit 3 hybrid off the tee, then 6/7 iron for my second and a wedge with my third, I've made par really my worst possible score. |

I'm a three shot guy as well, though I'm still taking driver off the tee most times. Anything over 500 and I'm in the 3 shot game too, but like Hawk I'm hitting driver when it's smart. Fact: I've only "gone for it" twice in my entire life lol. |

I usually always hit a driver and go for it. Unless its over 550 yards or a dogleg I have a good shot and getting it close in 2. Especially since my short game is better even if I end up in the sand I feel comfortable I can save par. The way I look at it is this. If I go for it in 2 I only need to hit 2 good shots. If I lay up I need to hit 3 to be on the green. Or if I miss my 3rd ill prob be close to the same as my 2nd if I just went for it. Although I have decent control of my 4 iron and 2 hybrid.

If I have a shot at getting the ball anywhere around the green and there isn't any trouble (out of bounds, water, etc.) I'm going for it. In my case, I feel that if I can get the ball around the green or on the green, I have a better shot at holing it for an eagle or making a birdie, than I do from 75+ yards out.

I guess it depends on your strengths then? I've made birdies and pars doing both ways, as well as bogeys or worse doing both ways. For me personally, if the green is pretty open, the closer I get the better chance of getting on there with a closer putt at birdie than 100 yards out at the same green. If the green is surrounded by water or a close hazard, assess the risk and go from there. Most situations it's a layup. |
