Lie Effect Question

I'm relatively new to the game and I pretty much read and watch video about all things golf since I started. One thing that interested me was how many golfers have recommended club fitting for lie angle. The logic being that if the the lie angle is wrong, the club face will open or close depending on whether the the club hits the ground toward the toe or toward the heel. Since I am a hack and many of my shots are mishits that might make sense for someone like me.
But, from what I have read and watched, a good golfer hits the ball before the ground with his irons therefore making what the club face does when it hits the ground kind of a moot point. What am I missing here? David

The ball stays on the face of the golf club alot longer than you think it does. That explains how the ball is still affected by the lie angle mishap

Well, it's not just an issue with the way the club contacts the ground. As loft increases, the lie angle will have more of an effect on where the club face is aimed.

One of the easiest ways to see this is to hit a ball with a wedge off a side lie (ball above your feet). Set up square to the target and then take a look where that face is aiming.

Interesting. I just figured at the moment of impact that ball was gone. Thanks.

This is an excellent post. I had an iron set that was way too upright for me. I literally couldn't hit the ball

I know I have shared this before, but Ralph Maltby does a great job of explaining the importance of lie angle in your irons.
