Pre shot routine and tempo

Lately Ive heard a lot about having a set pre-shot routine. How many of you have this? How did you get it? What is it? I dont think I ever walk up to a ball fairway or on the tee and do the exact same pre-shot routine before I hit. Is this hurting my game?

While watching the Golf Fix he was talking about the US Open (DVR'ed it) how important good tempo along with the pre-shot routine was going to be on Pebble Beach. So, what about tempo? Whats so important about tempo and my game? What does having good tempo do for me?

awesome questions. i find that the same pre shot routine helps me clear my mind of all kinds of swing thoughts and whatnot, it also helps me focus on what i want to try to do with the shot. i find it a relaxing and quick therapeutic sequence more than anything.

my routine is simple. i stand behind the ball, find my "spot", take a practice swing, address the ball, one quick glance back up, then pull the trigger.

My pre shot routine is set in stone. Look at the target. Setup to the ball and swing. Less than 15 seconds total. HAHA

my routine is always the same for hitting and putting no matter how my game is that day.

driving/irons/wedges- stand behind the ball about 5 paces, pick my spot, address the ball, go
putting- check the green from as many angles as possible, crouch behind the ball, 2 practice strokes, address the ball, go

I do this at the range too to simulate course conditions too. Helps reinforce the routine

This is a pretty simple routine. Do you EVER deviate from it? What if you take 2 swings for some odd reason, would you power chunk one into the water?

i don't deviate from it often but if i'm unsure about the wind or my club selection sometimes i throw and extra swing or two in.

thanks for reminding me of the power chunk into the water, lol

I have a pre-shot routine, sort of like practice swings. Usually, my practice swings turn out better than my actual swing haa haa. Same with my putts. I look at the hole from behind the ball, then try and gauge how far I'll need to hit it and then I'll do the same thing when I'm lined up to hit the ball.

haha I was trying to get to the bottom of how that happened

I have really been concentrating on a slower backswing and it has helped improve my ball striking. My preshot routine is to take two practice swings starting out slow and powering through the ball with a smoother tempo.

had nothing to do with the pre shot routine, but more to do with me pulling my head up

Practice swings are for people like pale rider and TC...hehe
All this thinking and stuff just gets in the way. Step up and hit works for me...HAHA
