iPhone app to track club avg, not on a course
 

Hello! I have GolfShot and love it. It has a golf club tracking feature that does work great. What i'm looking for though is an app that will allow me to track the distances of my clubs when i'm practicing away from a course. For example, i go to a field and knock some shots. I want to be able to measure how far i shoot using the GPS on my iPhone. I do not want to purchase a separate range finder. Thanks!

Nasdamus -- you may be able to just use GolfShot. The app can track your location wherever you are, not just on the golf course. The golf app just happens to also have courses that are in its memory, so it can place your current location on the course GPS map. But regardless, the app can track from point A to point B using the differences in GPS signal. THIS WILL REQUIRE YOU TO WALK TO THE BALLS AFTER HITTING THEM to mark the location -- not sure if that's okay or not?

I used to have a Callaway upro mx, and I currently have a Garmin Approach G6, and both of them did this. Just select any course to get the device in the active mode, and you can use the track shot function just like on the course. The only difference is that you won't be able to track your position on the course, because you're too far away from the hole. In fact, I just gave this a try at work (2 miles from the nearest golf course). I just selected that course, hit "begin tracking" walked to another building and yes, it does track.

So unless your GolfShot app is very stubborn (insists you are standing within xxx yards of a golf course), you may have everything you need already.

Not an iPhoner, but android has a free app called Shot Tracker . You can walk out the distances. Plus, it keeps track of it by club, and then gives you an average for the clubs you hit.

You can do this with Golfshot. Pick whichever course, just like you are going to play. Go to the first hole, again just like normal, then press the track button (the golf ball on the upper left of the screen). It will start tracking he shot. Pace off until you are at your ball and you have your distance. The app doesn't care that the first hole might be 2 miles away, all it know is how far it was from Point A (your hitting area) to Point B (where your ball is). It works great, I do it all the time and the really cool thing is now you can save those distances under the club you used to hit it and get a really good average for each club in your bag.

You guys are right on the money. I gave this a try and it will certainly do. I hope to try and really use this and get some real averages down. I've been having the natural tendency to think I hit the ball much farther than I actually do.

Don't we all. When I started tracking last year, I was depressed to see the actual distance I was hitting! Fortunately, it inspired me to improve, and working on not casting added 30+ yards to my drives!

Thanks for suggesting this, this is perfect for practicing at home, just downloaded it. Needed something to use in the paddock at home while I work on the pelz 3x4 system. This works perfectly for it.

I'm interested in getting Golf Shot for iPhone and it looks great, but before I pull the trigger are there any other iphone GPS apps I should be considering?

I have tried many of the apps and have found Golfshot GPS to be the most accurate, best interface and best on the battery. All of this and I have only played one course that it didn't have mapped. It is a slick app!

I just recently purchased Golfshot after some hard searching and Golfshot is the only (in my mind) legit golf GPS for the iPhone. I used it this weekend on the course and it was amazing. It does more than my Garmin G3 does.

Agreed. I went through golflogix and golfcaddy (i think) and there was just no comparison to Golf Shot. I use it and have no problems with battery drain etc. Very quick to lock onto GPS and stay, just read that manual for some tips. I keep my gps setting to allow it to run for 10 mins in the background and use the gps lock button everytime.

Thanks to all of you for the advice, and to gfb as well - I did a cursory search for other threads but obviously not in depth enough. I searched the courses that Golf Shot covers up here in BC and the list is as comprehensive as I could ever ask for. Looks like I'll be pulling the trigger. $30 isn't a lot, really, when you compare it to most Pocket Pro booklets that usually cost up to $10 each. Just wanted some confirmation that it was the one to go for and you guys gave me that. Appreciated.

right now I am using executive caddie on the iPhone. It has pretty good gps and it also calculates your handicap and your GIR and FIR.

Just checking back in here to drop another thanks to those that steered me towards Golfshot, and to echo what they said: it is a very useful app that I have been using for every round since I bought it back in March. I also have been using Golfplan, which is free and uses data mined from your Golfshot rounds to recommend practice drills that are demonstrated in videos with Paul Azinger. It will literally plot a practice routine for you a month at a time (3 days per week). When you finish a drill, you mark it complete and move on to the next one. I find it easy to lose focus when practicing, this has helped me a lot.
