Well the R9 TP's have been back to the original supplier and then back on to Taylormade, some sort of problem with the shafts where they are showing wear at the steps on the majority of my 3-PW :0(
Looks like Taylormade have done me proud and re-shafted the bad boys and they will be winging their way back to me very soon. I wonder if I will get out before the end of the year ...... ????? |

I thought I would create this thread for my upcoming golf year 2012. I will post updates and progress and some information of courses and highlights through the year.
Golf background : Up until a couple of years ago I have only ever been an occasional golfer, the odd golf outing here and there. So during these occasional rounds of golf, three figures was the norm and some regular golfing friends took delight in my on course, scoring meltdowns. I would occasionally drop into the 90's and those were good days. Played a lot of football(soccer) in my early teens and then played field hockey until my late 20's, I've been better than average at most sports but never a stand out. My circumstances changed and I found myself with a lot more time on my hands and I was looking for a distraction. Then I had a round of 83 on a course I had only ever hit mid-high 90's on, that was the turning point. 2010 - Playing Wilson Deep Red 2 irons 3-PW, purchased the local council golf ticket which allowed me to play the two local courses all year. By the end of the year I would say I had a regular playing handicap of 15-18. Low rounds were a 78(+12) on the Buddon at Carnoustie 80(+12) at the local council course, Caird Park As the scores were dropping I bit the bullet and upgraded my clubs to my current WITB at the start of the year 2011 - Playing second year on the ticket and I have been monitoring my scores online, it has my current playing handicap at 11. I would say I'm regularly playing 12-15 at the moment as the winter sets in. Low rounds this year were a 77(+8) at Ballumbie, on my birthday and out with close friends, couldn't write that kind of thing. 78(+9) at Caird Park Special mention for my 81(+10) at Camperdown, this is a narrow tree lined course and my previous best was an 89. I was so happy as the course was winning the psychological battle until then, even better that I was playing with the guys that had been laughing only a couple of years earlier. 2012 - I have already cancelled my council ticket. I have joined the Grange Golf Club in Monifieth and I will be playing regularly in 2012 on my way hopefully to getting my first official CONGU handicap, the target being a single figure of 9 by the end of the year. http://www.monifiethgolf.co.uk/ Medal course USGA rating; White Tees 72.14 slope 134 Yellow Tees 71.3 slope 131 |

Well I finally managed to get my first round of golf in 2012, things can only get better.
Feeling a little muscle fatigue today but that will disappear quickly enough once I get out playing regularly. On the first hole I drove my ball 270 yards to the front edge of the raised green, chipped up and on, then proceeded to 4 putt for a 6. This set the tone for the rest of my round. Driving was pretty consistant, irons not too bad but the putting was atrocious. I don't feel the need to go out and examine any part of my game as the irons and wedges come with playing regularly and the putting was just a freak off day. Glad they don't happen too often. |

I played 18 holes on the Ashludie Course today at Monifieth Golf Links, it was overcast, a little bit of rain and +15mph winds.
Playing standard tee's, mat's from the fairways and regular greens. The card for the course has it as a Par 68, SSS 66. I went round in 79, 10 par's, 35 putts and a couple of penalty drops when my ball nestled in gorse bushes. Couldn't buy a birdie today for some reason I'm really looking forward to getting out next weekend, mats no longer required. |

Played 18 holes on the Medal course today, overcast, +15mph winds
finished with an 88, :0( 40 putts and 1 penalty drop will be playing off grass next weekend though, goodbye winter mats :0) only real highlight today was the 16th hole, its 330yds but probably playing 350 with the wind against. I pulled a horrible tee-shot 150yds left past the trees and found myself on the fringe of the fairway on the 4th. Luckily because of wind damage the tree line has been extensively thinned and completely removed in places. I find my ball on a slight downhill lie, ball about 3in below my feet, I'm thinking its 210yds over a bunker to the front edge of the green, bit of space to the left of the bunker and the pin is sitting in the back right corner. I have a substantial gap in the trees to go for it and pull my 3w out of the bag, i don't mind going for things like this when i'm out playing. I punch the 3w low about 15-20m at its highest point with a slight fade and it drops on the back right corner and sticks on the green :0). This leaves me with a +20ft putt across the green, which i proceed to sink, the only one putt of my round!!! obviously feeling smug as a ..... i'm standing on the 17th tee waiting to play. i turn to watch the 3-ball playing up the 16th behind me, the green is now 60-70 yards to my left. 1st guy hooks and duffs his shot and bounds towards me. I casually step to my left and the ball trundles to rest on my tee. i'm in the way for the guys next shot so i go to pick up my bag and move it on the tee. as i lift it and turn i see the 2nd guys ball coming right at me between chest and waist height. somehow i manage to move me and the bag in a bodyswerve and the ball whistles past my left side and comes to rest 30yds past the tee. whew .... lesson learned, no post birdie smugness for me again !!! |

Well here I am on Tuesday, back at work and reflecting on the 4 days of golf I've just had.
Fri I played the Ashludie course with my brother in law. Its a par 68 course, SSS 65 and it doesn't have any par 5's. Played pretty well despite not hitting the green on any of the par 3's, only managed to par one of them and finished with a 77 (+9) Sat I played on the Medal course with my brother in law. Its a par 71, SSS 72, went round in 89 (+18) which was disappointing. Sun I played the Dougalston course with the_paulo and Br1an_g, the score isn't worth mentioning as its very tight and I played rubbish. Should have walked off after my tee shot on the first, hit a nice 3w over the water to the centre fairway. I then called my tee shot on the 2nd, hitting the very large tree, left side of the fairway with a rising baby fade about 150y out. Fri I was back on the Ashludie course with a couple of friends, despite a 7 on the front 9 I was on 66 with two holes to play, finished with a 7 then a 4 for another 77. Signs of improvement off the tee, full irons are disappointing at the moment, I'm either pulling or pushing shots, wedges are getting back to where I expect them to be and the putting is coming along nicely now that I'm getting the pace of the greens. Must remember to relax and get rid of these new course blues, always seem to struggle on a course I've never played before. Although I did manage a respectable +12 and +15 on two I played last year, not the usual and expected +28 |

I'm happy to report that my game is coming back to me after the winter months.
2nd weekend playing the full course, I've gone from low 90's to an 85 (+13) on Sunday. -This included one putt that should have dropped but was being held up by the wind. - A three putt on a par three for a four. - One extra shot on a par four when I played close to a fence, hit a post and had to go back 10 yards to play my next shot - A dropped shot after taking a paddle in the water - Managed to drop only one shot with a 5 5 finish on the last two holes, this was despite being in the trees off the tee on both holes Slowly but surely heading towards my target 80 on a regular basis |

Great stuff. It's nice to be able to get out there with no mats, a temperature above freezing and a dry day, isn't it?
Sounds like you're settling into that new course nicely. Getting the hang of the yardages on an unfamiliar course can take a while. Where are you seeing the main improvement? Mainly on and around the green? |
