Thinking Outside The Box
I don't remember any threads like this, but if so you mod's can delete or move this.
They say the scorecard has no pictures and, to me at least, the bottom line is getting the ball in the hole with the fewest possible strokes. I've played with a lot of guy's who attack tricky situations in rather unconventional way's and I'd love to hear some other way's you guy's get the job done. I will start with a couple: This wind has been crazy the last few weeks, so I dug out my very old Wilson Driver. Tiny head and low profile, it's perfect as a 3w alternative from the fw keeping the ball low under the wind and I'm hitting this thing as far or farther than my standard 3w off the deck. Playing a par 3 yesterday into a 30 mph wind, 162 yards. With that much wind I would normally hit a punch hybrid, but these A12's are just tough to keep under the wind. The guy's with me hit all kinds of clubs, all ballooned coming up well short. I actually tee'ed high with a 3w and let it balloon landing pin high right, one on my best shots all day. Anyone else do something out of the norm that just works well for them? |
Yeah, I hit pitches with my hybrid, usually when I need to curve it around a tree. Close the face way down, take a super steep swipe at the ball, and watch it turn like crazy and land 40 yards away.

It is a little tricky. Took me a long time to get it right, and it only has about a 50% success rate for me, but when it works, there is no substitute.

Recently started hitting driver off the deck in the rough when I need to keep the ball very low and rolling a lot. For example, a couple rounds ago I overhit a dogleg and ended up about 5 yards behind a pine tree that had no branches until about 5 feet up the ground. Pulled out the big stick and gave it a big, flat, draw-like swing and ended up rolling it about 10 feet past the hole.

All I did for all this ridiculous wind is just switch to my last ProV1 in the bag because it always had the lowest most piercing ball flight. Unfortunately, it was a little too piercing. After 11 holes, I hit a 3 iron on a par 3 and ended up in water behind a green.
After watching it splash down, I thought to myself "Wow, the proV1 plays really well in the wind. Too bad that was my last one." ~Rock |
Give the Nike 20XI a try. Pierces through the wind like nothing I have ever tried.

Due, I really like trying to hit that low punch shot I saw Esox use at the last Morgan Cup. I know with the Adams it's really hard to keep them under the wind so when I had them in the bag it was a low punch shot but I clubbed up haha. Almost defeats the purpose but it still allows for a really controlled shot (providing you hit the punch well, which I dont right now).
What I've found by putting most of my range time to a low punch shot, I'm hitting my irons a lot better. So maybe not a course thing but an overall golf fitness type deal, I've found a way to practice more consistent, solid contact. |

I love driver off the deck. I can slice that badboy like 60 yards Bubba style.

I played with a guy who putts out of the bunker a lot. I can't get the hang of that, but he's solid at it. |
Nothing too crazy, but when I need an easy punch shot from the trees or something like that, I take my 5 Hybrid and basically use a putter type stroke with it. It's straight and will roll forever.
|
I like to hit 3 hybrid out of the bunker sometimes. If it has a steep, tall face I knock it into the face and let it bounce up onto the green. Depends on the lie.

Like War, I like to punch with hybos and fwy woods. Sometimes you just have to try these shots duey. I've played a 3wood on a par 3 in Myrtle Beach once due to the wind. It felt weird.

I have one of the RBZ 5i's I could have kept low, but that thing likes to slice off the planet against the wind. |
On tight lies around the green I use my hybrid to bump and roll all the way up. I also use a push shot with my hybrid when the ball is in a shallow hole. I like to play where it lies. Sometimes I'll even use a hybrid out of fairway sand.

Here's another guy who uses hybos and FWs to punch out of trouble. I just tend to chunk irons when I try to punch them.

On holes where I need to control distance, instead of hitting 3W off the tee, I grip down 2-3 inches and hit driver. It's easier to keep from hooking than hitting 3W and the distance is about the same. Tee it a bit lower, it's also a good wind shot because of good striking and lower trajectory.
On tee shots where absolute control is needed with driver I grip down one inch, the ball carries almost as far but much easier to control. |
