How serious do you take etiqutte on the course?

How serious are you guys when it comes to golf etiquette?

Im not a super serious golfer, but Ive been playing for a long time now and I wish people were a little more conscious of golf course behavior...

I have a few people I play with now and again but there are times I wish I was just playing by myself... talking when people are teeing off, walking around on the tee box, littering, walking in people lines on the green, pulling flags when someones off the green, etc, etc, etc...

Some people dont care much, they just want to go out and have fun, drive the cart around drunk and hit a few nice shots that dont slice into the woods... I miss the days of playing in high school were we walked beautiful courses (for free) and actually played the game how it was meant to be played

I take things pretty seriously but at the same time as long as its not during my shot I don't care too much. I wouldn't put up with littering or any damage to the property though.

The one thing I don't care about that people tend to freak out about is walking through or standing on my line...unless you weigh 400 pounds or twist your feet it doesn't do anything so as long as I am not trying to read it as you do it it means nothing.

VERY seriously. I think etiquette on the golf course is a measure of the person themselves.

legal-advicer 07-05-2012 12:26 PM

If you walk on my line while i'm putting it's open season on the back of your head with my putter !!!

nicktender 07-05-2012 12:36 PM

Resonably serious. No talking when someone hitting. No walking on line. No littering. If your with someone who is new or having trouble , 10 shot and pick up rule. Flag stays in until everyone is on the green. Usually we play ready golf. You can still have alot of fun and follow simple rules

Some people just want to have fun, what a scary thought, how dare they.

Today I played golf and had lots of fun and I didnt care too much either while I was playing. To mention I nailed a few stellar drives, I drove the cart around drunk and on public roads too I might add. My friend walked in my line like an a-hole but whatever I was 25ft away and the odds of me sinking the putt regardless were not very good. I heard the others talking during one of my drives and I ended up dead center in the fairway. Next hole there was no talking only silence and I hit my drive in the bushes. And I dont miss my days of trying to play high school golf. How bad was I you ask? Well I tried out for the team my junior and senior year and each year I ending up shooting +3 and +4 on 9. Wouldnt ya know it, I wasnt good enough to make the team. It was comforting to know though that every other school in our division had a bunch of loser sorry arse golfers who couldnt break 100 if they wanted. All that aside I'll still heckle my friends "hey stupid you're tee'd up in front of the markers" or "hey idiot why are you aimed so far left" Its just a game, if you cant have fun having fun then you're doing it wrong.

Etiqutte is relative. I don't care if people are talking when I swing. But iwalking in my line on the green is another thing. If it bugs you, say something. If you won't say something, find a new playing group.

Again, it is all relative, somethings bug others more. But littering and damaging the course is unacceptable.

The behavior you described is extreme disregard for etiquette and I just wouldn't play with those guys.
But I play with guys that know my game and I theirs so a little banter on the tee is not a big deal to me. Walking in my line with soft spikes, doesn't bother me one bit. Unless you are playing extremely soft wet greens you will never know the difference.
Now when I'm playing in a big money match i tend to follow proper etiquette pretty much to the letter.

thakitt 07-05-2012 02:13 PM

I try to be conscious of all other golfers, the only thing that bothers me is someone standing in my line of sight, either directly behind me or on the other side of the hole while I am putting. I ask people who continually do this to please move over for me while I putt.

Discussions like this really put a tear in my eye wishing I could be playing high school golf. Darn charter schools with no sports.

I'm the only golfer at my school. Only one. All the others are just kids who happen to play golf a little. When I'm with them it's pretty regular for someone to say an expletive word in my backswing, walk in my putting line, putt the pin when I'm in the sand, someone actually pushed their push cart right on the green and set it next to their ball once, and all but two are horrible golfers and concede half the holes. No matter what I try to do to teach and or enforce etiquette nobody follows it.

I feel bad because I put together a golf club (no pun intended) for the school and nobody takes it seriously at all, making me not even want to participate any more.

Etiquette is moderately important to me. You can talk during my swing, walk in my line, none of that bothers me, but you need to respect others.

Attarderb 07-05-2012 03:03 PM

In my opinion it's all about who you are playing with. If I get paired up with someone I do not know, etiquette is priority #1. If its my weekly Sunday or Wednesday group, then volume Freddie said, banter during the round is common, all while still observing proper etiquette in regards to others game.

If your playing with buddies, the banter is one if the best parts of the game, especially if you can get in the head of the person you ate playing.

While etiquette is important. There is nothing worse than playing golf with someone who is way too serious about everything.

This is exactly why I try to tee off before 8 AM. All the drunks are still asleep.

I take it pretty serious as well. Proper etiquette is not all that difficult to follow. Pretty simple stuff. As a part time worker at my home course, I can tell that there are thousands of players that show little respect for the course i.e pitch marks on the greens, huge divots on the course unrepaired, litter, cigar/cigarette butts on the ground etc. Just goes to show that millions of great respectable people play golf, along with millions of self centered, lazy people. We teach Jr's at our course to leave the course better than they found it and to respect others on the course.

cialviagra 07-05-2012 04:39 PM

Not hard to follow basic etiquette and it doesn't mean you can't have fun.

A bit of common sense goes a long way.

Ive had plenty of EXTREMELY fun rounds where the etiquette of the group was held in the highest regard. Less etiquette doesnt mean more fun for me. In fact, when etiquette isnt taken into consideration, it really takes away from the experience for me.

ElenaEvgeevna 07-05-2012 04:43 PM

I really think golf etiquette is such a simple thing to follow (hell if you read the scorecard the course will give you guidelines to follow) and if people I'm golfing with can't go along with the basic things that have been said throughout this thread then they are hopeless.

derty 07-05-2012 04:50 PM

I take basic golf etiquette pretty serious....be quiet when someone is hitting, don't take out the flag until everyone is on the green, furthest from the hole is first to play, the walking on my line thing doesnt really bother me unless the course is wet as some others have said....rake bunkers when you finish...repair ball marks and divots...banter is fine and encouraged but that can be done while following a few simple guidelines.....golf etiquette shows respect for the game and your fellow competitors.
