If I have a severe downhill I still like to get it past the hole, it leaves a better putt coming back if I miss. If I'm way below the hole and uphill I like to get it past by a foot or so. Gives me a read on the the break.

I think getting it past the hole helps your speed on those 6-10 footers. My last round in Florida with JB was an eye opener. I'd leave putts short and never have a shot. Sometimes breaks move more than we think and just trying to die it can exaggerate the break to the point we miss an easy putt. JB gave me some good advice and its helped me when i remember to follow it. In the end, you have to pick a strategy and always stick to it. I personally am a fan of a firm putt and if I leave it short and miss, I more disappointed than if I miss while being long.

My worst thing during a round is I start off with firm putts and then I loose a bit of confidence in my putting. When this happens I start to short my putts and don't putt well at all. I need to keep the strategy of putting past the hole during the whole round. It is just hard when you roll one or two by a bit to much.

Agreed dude. But if you keep it, you can usually turn around a bad start. Well, we both just said the same thing essentially. We're twins!

I can see that happening for sure.

Going off of what Rusty posted - I will admit to being influenced by Harvey Penick and Bob Rotella with my opinion. Do you all consciously think "I want to get it 18 inches past the hole" when you are preparing your putt or is it just something that you do automatically?
When I am visualizing my putt, I imagine it traveling a certain speed when it arrives at the hole. In my mind, that speed is just enough for the ball to roll 6 or 8 inches by. Obviously, my imagination is not that precise, and since I'm not really visualizing MISSING the putt, its all about the speed I want the ball rolling when it hits the hole. with that speed in mind, I start figuring out how much I think the ball will break, and then finding my target line.

I don't really think one is wrong or right. I've read some arguments on both sides. I think that choosing a strategy and being confident in it is probably the most important thing I guess. It's not that I putt to miss short. I just putt to get the ball right to the hole. If it's short or long, I misjudged, so I don't feel worse about one vs the other.

But not hitting it hard enough guarantees yourself extra putts, but hitting it hard enough or a little too hard gives you a chance at a 1 putt.

My Dad always said he'd rather be 3 feet long than 1 foot short on putts and I believe that as well. Short never has a chance to go in...

If I leave a 40 footer a foot or two short I'm alright with that but I hate leaving putts short from say 25 feet and in.

I really hate leaving putts short. I'd rather run it by the hole, at least I will know the line coming back.
