July is nearing and that means my 2nd annual Summer buddy trip is nearing, it's just two of us but he's the guy that got me back into the game after many years away so I like to do it right.
I'm stuck between Charleston, SC and my old hometown of Wilmington (not actually Wilmington proper) since I still have a home there. I've golfed quite a bit in Charleston in the past two years and have found some really good tracks that we like quite a bit...and some resteraunts that are out of this world. I've not played in Wilmington in probably 10-12 years and then it was something to kill time between fishing trips Anyone have some suggestions for the SE NC area? Here are a few I'm looking at: Carolina National, Fred Couples design (no idea how his courses are) http://www.carolinanationalgolf.com/...840&page=47498 Lockwood Folly Country Club http://www.lockwoodfolly.com/ Echo Farms Country Club http://www.echofarmsnc.com/golf/prot...msnc/index.htm Bald Head Island http://www.bhiclub.net/club/scripts/...APP=80&DN=GOLF Big-Cats sister courses http://www.big-cats.com/ Anyone have some other suggestions, or whatnot. Myrtle Beach is still in the equation as it's 45 minutes from the front door. |

I love Charleston, it is my wife and myself's favorite city to visit, as you said the dining is great. If you are doing the NC trip this year I suggest http://www.river18.com/ it is worth playing for the 9th hole alone. I played there last summer and the greens are a hybrid bent and were in very good shape even though it was hot. I have played all of the Big Cats courses and I like Tigers Eye and Leopards Chase the best of the 4. Have fun my friend.

Carolina National is a favorite of mine and we usually make a point of playing there on the way home from Myrtle Beach, it's 27 holes as well if you want to make a day of it. Fun layout that is challenging but won't beat you up playing it. Another suggestion that is kind of close to there is the Arnold Palmer designed Rivers Edge, amazing layout, but a pretty tough track. A little further South is Thistle Golf Club, another 27 hole course that is a links style course that can be a challenge if the wind is up, but an amazing course.

Golf South of Wilmington has exploded apparently in recent years, the Hwy 17 corridor is littered with courses now. Charleston has a leg-up since my favorite course is there and I can she-crab soup by the bucket |

But Charleston is full of South Carolinians, who wants to go there when you can experience the wonderful folks of North Carolina. SC = NC landfill. Although, I think we should steal Charleston, and get rid of the rest.
My vote is to go to Charleston. Go and play at Wild Dunes, check out Roy Williams' house! |

Decided on going back to Charleston, I can't lie it might be the best city in the South. Having to do the trip on a budget since my friend just had to purchase a new car, still getting in 3 rounds of golf and an ample amount of that fantastic low-country cuisine.
Playing the following courses, Dunes West www.golfduneswest.com We always have played this course while in town, nothing tricky, Arthus Hills design, just a great course in great shape. Links at Stono Ferry www.stonoferrygolf.com First time here, I spent time researching the siege operations that occured nearby during the Rev. War for an undergrad project, should be cool. Charleston National charlestonnationalgolf.com My favorite course, Rees Jones design that has the most scenic back 9 I've ever played I'm desperately trying to convice him to allow me to pay for a round here Spoiler Ocean Course @ Kiawah Island, next weeks course set-up will be a mock-up for the 2012 PGA Championship I'll post reviews after our rounds, next week. |
