I would say generally each pays their own way, unless you're just going with your buddy who also has a private membership somewhere of equivalent value and you have a very reciprocal friendship.
That being said, depending on what the cost is, you have to make sure you only invite people who can actually afford it and it isn't going to blow their budget. |

Depends on your relationship. If you're bringing clients they wouldn't expect to pay I wouldn't think. Family or friends I guess it's up to you. Several times a year I used to play a private club with my friend as a guest of his father. I always offered to pay, but never did. He always popped for the round.
Of course I would go in there with my low handicap, get on the greens that were like putting on glass, and he and his old buddies would basically empty my wallet. I also made sure I popped for a couple cocktails after the round. Always had a fantastic time. The course is so great. Lots of trees, brutal rough, and bunkers surrounded undulating greens that were perfect. I've never played greens anywhere better than those. The fee for belonging to this place has dropped considerably over the last couple years, and if my daughter's swing coach didn't work out of a different club, I would maybe take the plunge. Kevin |

Thanks folks! I have been a member of this club for a couple of years now and have mostly just treated some friends who I know reciprocate... I expect to play more golf than ever this summer but picking up the tab can get VERY expensive VERY quickly. I guess it's kind of like using the same rules you would when going out to dinner with folks.

depends on the price. If it is expensive then I say you pick it up. I am sure if they had money to spend on a $100 round then they would be members as well. If its an affordable rate, then I am sure they would have no problem paying. |

I'm not so sure about that one - I can afford a $100 round without thinking about it too much, but there's no way that I can afford a membership to a private club. |

Not for me. If you invite them to play, that gets them in the door to a club they could not normally play, but they have to pay their own way. |

I've always had the idea that the invitor is going to pick up the tab be it dinner, golf, etc.... If you invited me, I'd ask about paying my greenfee at the start. If you picked it up, I would want to invite you to play at the next opportunity on my dime. I know people who are members at different clubs and they do round swaps all the time. Guests rates at some privates are a good deal so either party can reciprocate pretty easily.
This all may go out the window depending on how much money is lost or won though. |

When I belonged to a CC I always paid, thats kind of the point of inviting if you ask me. Would be really uncomfortable to stand there and ask for money after you invited someone. I always offer to pay for anything someone treats me to, but anytime I invited someone to anything I was planning on paying.
