Default Slow Greens :anger:
I hate slow greens. Sunday, I played on greens that were rolling a 13 and they were wonderful. I come home and play 9 yesterday on greens that were rolling so much slower. I could not sink a putt to save my life. I had 19 putts in 9 holes and that is just stupid.

Does anybody else just hate slow greens?

you do have to realize though, that as fast as those greens were saturday, they were relatively flat. we may be singing a much different tune if they would've had more undulation to them.

but yes, i putt much better on quicker greens myself. maybe b/c it's easier to stroke the ball when the greens are fast as opposed to hitting the ball when greens are slow?

I do as well and our here are extremely slow now. They have shut down most of our courses and the few still open seldom mow. Its awful.

I love slow greens, you can pin fire, and they generally break less. birdies all day long

My greens arn't so bad either and I missed several very easy putts due to the drastic change in speed. I felt like I had to hammer the ball each time. Hopefully they will get faster once they do their final cut and painting.

I'm a fan of slower greens too for the more part. We played on Saturday and the greens were not only fast but had some pretty slick breaks imo lol. I agree with Thainer in the sense I can be a lot more aggressive. Just better suited for my game.

I would love to putt on the Old Union greens we played Saturday Setho all year long. Like TC said though, if Old Union had more undulation in them they would have been extremely tough.

If all the greens were like Old Union I would love my greens trimmed short. I am more of a fan of the slow greens though like we have in my part of the world right now. I usually don't know my own strength until the ball goes flying past the hole and I end up with a 4 putt.

I am surprised you say that. Youy started putting great on the quick greens.

I don't like slow greens either Seth. I like to put a stroke on a putt, not hit it. I also putt so much better on fast greens. Slow greens just mess with my rhythm and tempo.

I think it is more what I have been used to rather than what I can pull off now. I can be easily converted once my consistency is established, I just need to spend more time on the practice green.

thats it right there, and make sure your practicing the correct stroke. not that lifting thing. Glad to see you got home safely!

I actually don't prefer either. The only thing I REALLY want in a green is for it to roll true and smooth.

I've putted on 11+ stimped greens that are so bumpy along the way that it doesn't matter how perfect your line is, you won't make it without luck.

Slow but true greens require that longer stroke that you need for very long putts on quick greens anyway. Good practice to get long strokes down too!

i hate slow greens - i like to be able ot find a line and just do a nice easy stroke - when it gets slower - you really have to speed up the stroke and extend things - leads to errors on my part.

I guess I don't mind slower greens as much when I am used to them, but I don't like going from a 13 to an 8 or so.

Good point, Seth. I do better with some consistency as well. When I came back from Florida, I was all thrown off.

I like fast greens if you can play from all sides of the pin and not be penalized for hitting the green. My home course decides to test peoples sanity every fall since our bentgrass greens reach immaculate health and fullness. Yesterday I have to tell you almost made me quit the game of golf. You could miss a 3 foot putt that rolled out 8 feet if there was the slightest bit of slope around the cup, and our greens are very small and extremely sloped. The hardest part of fast greens isn't so much the putting as when you are around the green and trying to get the ball close. You have very small spots you can land the ball without it running 20 feet past the hole and being above the hole is an automatic 3 putt. I like greens that have a speed that lets the ball roll out about 3 feet when they start to slow down. I hate it when the ball stops on a dime and I hate it when the ball will not stop. So it totally depends on the type of grass, the amount of slope on the greens and most importantly the pin locations to me. But I have never had a blow up round from slow greens because you hardly ever have to worry about your next shot as much as you do with screaming fast ones.

I just want my greens to roll true. The speed of the green adds to the uniqueness of that specific course. I'm not a great golfer by any means, but if you are putting poorly, isn't a little careless to blame the speed of the greens? Whatever that saying is about a carpenter blaming his tools comes to mind.

I'm with him.

I "prefer" greens that are about 12, but if it rolls true and the ball doesn't look like its play hopscotch on the way to the hole I can make due.

on a side note, I may hate greens that are too fast even more. Tap the ball and you end up off the green 5 yards just pisses me off >.<
