Alignment issues!! Tips needed!

Im having issues with alignment. Ive been missing greens right and then left. I had a lesson on Saturday and after Id get set up he's show me where I was pointed. WOW! Im talking 30 feet to the right. Today I had a case of the thins but when I did hit it clean I was a little left.

So, what do you do to get aligned correctly? He had me start with getting my right foot square to the target first and then my left foot. It helped some but Im still struggling. I look like Im aimed good and then miss way right or left.

I love the chance to pimp Dean Reinmuth:

Look at the first three videos.

I'm a fan of Camilo's technique:
Sand behind the ball and point your club straight up in the air, lining it up with your target. Move your eye way down the shaft until you hit a good intermediate target, just a couple feet in front of the ball. Then it's as simple as setting the clubface perpendicular to the intermediate target, and stepping right into position.

This is not Reinmuth but a guy demonstrating the technique. Watch the other videos though, because he doesn't get into as much detail as Reinmuth does.

This is good stuff. Alignment is always something I struggle with.

This is what I do as well. I pick a spot 6" to 8" in front of the ball on the same line and hit over that line. But, I liked what was in the vid, good stuff.

I personally step into the shot with one foot, and aim first with my club. I then line up based on that set up.

I know a lot of people that utilize something specific on the ground about 2-5 feet in front of the ball and in line with the green, and lining up directly to that.. Worth a shot I'd say..

I have no idea if this will help but I am actually going to try it the next time i golf. I thought about it while I was putting today on the 18th hole.
You know how some ppl use the line on their ball to help align their putt? What about using the same line to line up your tee shot, then align your club to that and fire away.

Gees I just fixed my internet so I havent been able to check out those vids yet but I will soon. Thanks for the tip so far! Stupid Netgear router fell off the computer the other day and hasnt been right since. Speeds were draggin, so I hook up the old router and were flying now!

Sometimes I'll make a quick allignment check once I'm set up. I'll position my club shaft parallel to my toe line and then see if it is pointing at my intended target.

The other tips in the thread are all spot on -- I was struggling with some pretty bad alignment close to a year ago, and adopting the "target a couple inches in front of the ball" technique helped a ton.

One tip on practicing alignment on the range... I used those alignment sticks* you often see the pros using, but instead of laying it down perfectly aligned, I'd try to set myself up with a ball in front of me, "aimed" at my target. Then I'd lay the alignment stick down up against my toes, back off and see where I was really aligned. It helped me be sure I was aligned where I thought I was.

* The alignment sticks I use are driveway markers from Home Depot, available for ~$1.50 apiece.

This is brilliant! I'll be running to Home Depot this week.

I actually found them at lowes. Home depot didn't have them. But they work great.

I do this for every tee shot as well as every putt, I find that it helps me out a bunch. When I'm practicing on the range, I will even take the stripes that are on the sides of the range balls and use them to align myself with my target.

I also use alignment sticks on the range. One of the sticks is between my feet and the ball, helping me line up my feet and shoulders parallel to the target line. I take the other stick and put it about 3-4 feet in front of the ball, right on the target line of the ball. I've actually found that it helps me on the range in terms of making sure that my clubface is lined up with my target, and also helps me to look for a target a few feet ahead of the ball, even when the stick isn't there when I'm hitting shots on the course.

I have a tendency to set up closed so i always pick 2 targets.
1 is the flag (or target for the ball) and i aim the ball and club at that
the other will be to the left of the flag/ball target and i aim my feet there.
it feels weird and takes a bit of effort but it definitely helps me by having 2 clear spots to set up to

Great videos Smallie. I struggle with alignment, always left of my target just like Dean stated for a southpaw. Add my tendancy to slice and I get into trouble alot. Off to the range today to work on alignment.

IssuessBratte 08-09-2010 06:05 PM

I apparently had been having some alingment issues lately also, a friend and scratch golfer said that my club, feet, and hips were allinged properly but my shoulders were way open. So now i have someone stand behind me on occasion to check my shoulders and make sure that they are on line also.

For some reason I can never get those videos to work on the GC site.

oem, i think that you need to do that drill where you pick something out a few inches in front of the ball and align everything to that.

btw, your smart phone is dumb!

I have tried that before.

Your service sucks. What plan do you have? The garbled up service plan?
