Fore!
I am new to the game so please forgive what may be a stupid question...
What do YOU do when someone behind you yells, "Fore!"? Do you hit the deck? Just cover your head and duck? I'm assuming that you do not turn around to see what is coming and take one between the eyes. -Steven |
duck...don't look....the time you spend turning around could be used to hide
|
By the time most people yell "FORE!", the ball has already thumped down somewhere in my vacinity...http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...ies/angry2.gif

I usually just put my hands up and protect my head and neck as much as possible.

Unfortunately, now that I've been hit by a golf ball and whenever anyone yells FORE I'm ducking for cover, force of habit. Being hit by a ball is NOT fun!! Its too late by the time someone yells FORE anyways.
For instance: This weekend we played at a golf course and I was in someone else's fairway, so I went to go and get my ball (not to play it). It was in the middle fairway and someone teeing off on the fairway to the other side of that was right in front of me, the ball was hit way off and coming diagnolly towards me and he yells FORE, well, DUH, it was a little too late and needless to say, I jumped out of the way as it was coming towards my legs and it wouldn't have felt pleasant had it hit me. I'm afraid of golf balls in play now!! I'm just always cautious now and you just never....know... |
I drop and cover, trying to make as small a target as possible. It is a toss up whether to move or not. You could be moving in the wrong direction. I figure being a small target is the best move. I will also put my bag between me and the source of the yell, it can't hurt.
|
I turn towards the person yelling and open my mouth, because you never know... it might be a pro-v1!
|
I just turn my back to the direction that the noise comes from and cover the back of my head. I'll hide behind a cart or tree if I'm close, but I don't run for cover. I've had balls land inches from me before but I haven't been hit yet.
|
covered my head.
I been hit once in my back. That time, my drive went into the next fairway, I waited for the people in that fairway to hit, which were going in the opposite direction. I am ready to hit my ball and I get hit on my back by one of the guys in my group, till this day I can't figure how this guy hit me, when he was parallel to me on the opposite Fairway! and by the way I never heard , Fore |
I don't move. I turn my back to the direction of the warming and cover my head/neck with my arms. Makes me feel tough.
|
Most of the time people don't even both yelling FORE or anything for that matter!!
|
Thanks to all for your input.
If there are really people out there who do not call out a warning maybe I should swap out my Dodger cap for my old hockey helmet. -Steven |
I kind of live life dangerously.
I have never once ducked or went for cover at the sound of a "fore" call. I actually look in the direction of the people shouting it, watch to see where they are looking, and try to spot the ball before it hits the ground, or tree, or person, or cart, etc etc. That might come back to bite me someday. |
Pretty much nothing. If I am in the wrong spot, at the wrong time, so be it. If I get hit, I just hope it is a premium ball, because I am keeping it. Cheap balls go deeper into the rough. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...ies/banana.gif

I was waiting on a long par 3 (we had asked the group behind to hit up). A ball went by my cheek so close that I felt it brush the hairs on my skin. They didn't see me because I was behind some trees (evergreens - no leaves), boy was I lucky that day! Just carried on like nothing happened but I three-putted that green. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/beat-up.png |
I usually dont do anything when I hear someone yell, "FORE!!". By the time you look to see if the ball is coming at you, the ball is there anyways; so your odds of dodging the ball are pretty slim.
Its one of the risks you accept when you set foot on a golf course. |
