I felt it was time for my 16 year old son to get fitted for his very own clubs instead of using my hand-me-downs.
We went to our club and met with the fitter (a former Titleist fitter of the year). The fitting was "inside" but he hit balls out into the driving range. He had my son on the lie board, used impact tape and the like. It turns out his old clubs were too short, the lie was too flat, and the flex too soft. He hit a lot of different irons with a lot of different shafts. The pro put him on something called a Flight Scope. The software was unbelievable. It seemed to measure everything. What I found interesting, for example, was that he might have a higher club head speed with one club, but a higher smash factor with another, and even though the club head speed wasn't as high the ball speed and smash factor were higher. Among the irons he hit there was a 15 yard gap in carry distance. That really surprised me. After hitting balls for an hour, monitoring ball flight out onto the range, comparing the various clubs/shafts with regard to the numbers on the Flight Scope, etc., it came down to two irons: the Titleist CB and the Titleist AP1. He decided on the AP1s as there was a bit more forgiveness, though when he hit the CBs on the sweet spot it provided the best numbers, but very close to the AP1s. In any event I was very impressed with the fitting and the process. The pro was meticulous. My son ended up with the AP1s and Vokey wedges, +0.5 inches, 2º upright, and the Nippon NS Pro 1050 GH in a stiff flex. I'm just glad he will finally have a set of irons and wedges he can call his own. |

It is amazing how all the technology does what it does. I was a bit overwhelmed when I did it myself. I hope they work well for him. |

Sounds like a lot of fun.
Just got fitted myself recently using similar technology. It sure was eye-opening. I felt like hey, I am making the best choice based on objective data. Grip, shafts, lie, type of irons, everything was logically chosen. I liked that as opposed to my last set from 10 years ago - I played with them for years just because they felt good. As it turns out, grip too small; and shaft not stiff enough. |
