Default How Important Are Looks?
I just read Gasman and TCalloway's comments about not liking a driver's appearance. Not liking the "1" on it seemed a bit fussy, but we all have different quirks. So that got me thinking about a club's looks. How important are looks to you? I know some of you guys tend to think of your clubs as being feminine so does that play into it. I tend to think of my clubs as being masculine, but not in a macho way.

I like to think that as long as it works for me I'd play anything, no matter what it looked like. But I still can't get past a square driver! So yes, looks matter, whether I like it or not.

If it has the performance I seek I don't care how ugly it is.Results have their own beauty and if it took something ugly to get them..oh well.

I've gotten to hit such a narrow range of clubs it's hard to say. Except I don't like a wide sole on my irons. Can't hit 'em.

The look of a club will draw me in to test it out if I haven't read any reviews. I'll play with ugly stuff as long as it out-performs the competition.

It does to me and I'm afraid that I won't actually find the best irons for my game because there are certain brands that I won't even try because I find all of their clubs ugly. Yeah I've got issues.

Until today, I would have disagreed with you. I've never worried about thick toplines, or square drivers, or alignment graphics, etc.

But today I pulled my clubs out of my ClubGlove for the first time since returning from Tejas. Somehow (I'm guessing TSA) the rubber cap on my alignment stick had come off (and it is now MIA) and the stick had somehow (again, I'm guessing TSA) worked its way into my driver headcover. The top of my driver is now all scratched up.

I was horrified. More concerning, I find it completely distracting at address.
Oy vey!

I agree with BigLefty, I have to feel confident when I am addressing the ball or its a non-starter for me. I know its not reasonable, but there it is.

Alignment stick??? What's that?

I'm not that concerned about appearance. That said, I like the appearance at address of my Titleist AP-2 irons better than any of the GI irons I've had over the last 20 years. Maybe I like how they look because I also like how they feel? Anyway, performance is my yardstick, not looks.

BTW, I knew when I saw the thread title that Diane was the starter...

I guess for me, confidence = how the club performs. The look is merely a side note.

Ugly, good looking, or plain jane, makes no difference to me . Just as long as the club delivers the goods. Ugly score cards are worse than ugly golf clubs.

For drivers and woods i couldnt care less what the bottom looks like, but if the look at address is ugly, forget it.
Same with irons. Its got to be good at address. Couldnt care less what is or isnt in the cavity.

Really? Because I wasn't the one complaining about a "1" on a driver or scratches.

Alignment stick??? What's that?

(note: not my bag. Just a random net image)

Fiberglass driveway markers (used so snow plows know where cars are parked, driveways are located, etc). They sell at Lowes for $1.25 (or online at golf specialty sites for $10+)

Used for alignment, or stick in the ground at an angle to work on swing plane, etc.

EDIT: Another random net image:

Also, here (about the 1:35 mark if you don't want to watch the whole thing.)

EDIT #2: And here:

I also struggle with an over the top move, so I stick one in the ground at a 45 degree angle (tip of stick over ball, base end stuck in ground behind ball - along target line behind ball) to force me to swing from the inside.

I'm not sure if you were being serious or not, but maybe there are others who don't know.

They are just these light-weight portable sticks that help you with your alignment on at the range. Place them on the ground etc.

Looks used to mean a lot to me. I find them less important over the last several years. Possibly because I've gotten older and less appealing myself, and would hate to be dismissed at a glance because of my looks.

You think your clubs are judging you?
