I have to say I agree with that JP, in looking back. From a learning basis, but in playing the course, I'm pretty comfortable with my driver and hitting to the 100 mark would most likely save me strokes I think.
If I've learned one thing from this game, it's that the more you take yourself out of your comfort zone, the better and more well rounded you become as a golfer.

mountain golf is a wee bit different from courses at or around sea level. i see a lot more tree lined fairways and a lot of doglegs and a lot of elevation changes from tee to green. i used to always pull driver or 3 wood but in the past couple of years i've really focused on course management and leaving myself with comfortable distances in. i tend to tee off a lot with my hybrid, 4 or 5 irons. i don't think there's a club in my bag that i don't hit regularly. i never go for par 5's in two unless i have a realistic shot of getting there. i guess it all depends on the types of courses you play.

I play the back tees specifically for this reason. I find myself using my 4 and 5 irons alot. The par 4 distances vary. I will usually use my 6 iron and below around 7-10 times per round.

I carry a 4-iron as my longest club, and don't use it that often. I've become very dependent on my #5 and #3 TM Rescue Fairway clubs, to the point that I even use them to punch out of trouble. The 5, 6, and 7 irons are getting more use from the fairway as I get older, and lose a little distance each year.

I will pull the 4-iron out, however on par 3's that are around 185-190 yards. I find if I use the #5 hybrid off the tee, I tend to sky it.

I guess maybe I played the back Tee's 3 times all last year. The sad part was they were always in tournaments. I'll have to spend more practice rounds on the back ones, certainly can't hurt, every thing to gain.

I tee off a lot with my 3-iron (I don't have any hybrids or woods because I have a tendency to hook them), and all of my irons get a work out. I use my 3-iron from the fairway a lot on par five's and long par 4's.

You boys need to get on some longer courses or play tees further back...if your second shot is a 8 or 9 iron all the time you're starting too close to the hole...

...my home course has several holes that are designed to force you to hitting longer irons...lateral hazards, fierce doglegs, trees in the fairway, quick elevation changes that make the smart play the flat area 180 out as designed...due to this the driver comes out the hands quite often as well and some tees even from the tips an iron off the tee is th smart play...one short par 4 plays best as 4 iron/6 iron for instance...so yeah, I use and hit them alot...

I just got back in from playing my home course from our black tees, next to last at 6552yds 70.2/128 rating. I used my putter, driver, 52 and 56 wedge, 9i, 7i, 5i, 4 hybrid and 3w the entire round. Didn't use my 5w, 6i, 8i, PW or 60 degree. If I were to move up to the blue tees at 5986yds 67.1/115 rating, I know I would have needed my PW and 8i and probably my 5w in addition to the other clubs I used today. When playing the back tees there are less options in club selection it seems. I drive the ball 250yds, hit my 3w 225yds and that leaves a 52 or 56 wedge for me assuming I got the distances I needed on the par 5s. On the par 4s, I hit driver 250yds and a 9i or 7i for the next shots on almost all of them. On the par 3s I hit my 5i or 4 hybrid on 3 of them and 7i on the other one.

That sounds pretty close to what I play here from the Blacks. 6688 yds 72.3/115. I simply don't hit these iron's far enough to reach anything. I have to rely a lot on my 3 and 4 hybrids. If I try pushing on a 4 or 5 iron my strokes start running up like the utility meter.

I am not very long off the tee, so unfortunately my 4-6 get used a lot more often than my 7-9...
