Have You Ever Used a Caddy?
 

I won a golf trip for four at a tournament a while back to a nice course that you have to use caddy's (ies?). I've never had one before, but sounds kind of cool.

How much do you tip? Does this mean I have to walk? Will he carry my beer?

What should I expect? Someone needs to make this a poll, I don't have a clue how??

Ive never had one either. I imagine you would tip between 20 to 100 dollars based on what you feel is right.

A fourcaddy? I have no clue. It should be pretty interesting anyway. I've heard this is a really nice course. I'll go on line and see what kind of caddy?

I'm betting it's this fourcaddy, but couldn't find it on their site. Looks like a heck of a course. We don't have to do it until spring so the weather should be great.

Not anymore, it was in 1985! (My only brand new car ever, an '85 Somerset) I decided after that, the depreciation on a car is something you let someone else take.

I always liked those long Eldorados from the '70s.

I've never hired a caddy. In Ireland we took trolleys because the wife was not comfortable enough with her game to want a caddy with us. That was kind of a bummer.

I toted a hell a lot of bags between the ages of 12 and 15, mostly to play on Mondays at a local country club. Went there four or five days a week with a buddy. In those days fees were $4.75 for a "B" caddy, and $6.00 for an "A" caddy. Tips ranged from $.25 to $5.00 with a buck or two the norm. After getting paid, we would generally go across the highway to the mall, get a hot dog and fries at the grill in J.C. Penny's, then go to the arcade, Aladdin's Castle, turn the what was left of the fee into quarters, and play pin ball and driving games until one of our parents got off work and came and picked us up. This was before video games.

I was kind of a lousy caddy. I had to go back to caddy school twice, but I won the caddy championship two years in a row.

That would have been pretty cool Esox. I worked at a go cart track. They didn't actualy pay me, I got my brothers and sisters in for free. It was fun, but got ran over a lot.

I have used forecaddies before and played alone. Once we took the cart and he drove and handed me all my clubs, cleaned them after each swing, provided yardage and read the greens for me. I usually tip him about 20% of what the greens fees are. In this particular case the greens fees were about 200 bucks so he got a $40 tip. Seems reasonable for all they do and at most courses their only pay is the tip they receive. Their other bennie is that they usually get to play all the free golf at the home course.

Actually, the caddying was only cool some of the time. While there were nice members, a fair number were jerks. Guys who couldn't play a lick, yet liked to blame their shortcomings on the 13 year old kids making $5.00 for toting their enormous golf bags full of cut up balata Titleists.

The caddy shack and yard were fun, and there were a few players that requested me after I'd been there a couple years, but I was there for the Monday golf. On the other hand, I guy I played high school golf with stuck it out through high school and received a full ride Evans Scholarship to the University of Wisconsin. He also used to caddy in the Greater Milwaukee Open back in the day for a couple tour pros, and made some decent money as a college student doing that.

I prefer not to have a caddy, but a couple of my golf buddies like to go to decent courses and use caddies. Depending on the level of satisfaction with the caddy, I typically tip a little over half of the price of the caddy. Often, if I get an older, experienced caddy, I will tip a bit more than I would tip a kid... but that is because the older gentleman is usually more knowledgeable and gives great advice (i.e. the greens generally slope towards the mountains on this course).

Generally you will walk with a caddy (exception for some forecaddies). Also, seeing that the course you will be playing will have caddies, I bet they will also have bag drop attendants, club-cleaning teens, and cart-cleaning folks. At some courses, these folks expect tips too.

Itnerlopper is right, depending on the course everyone works for tips to some degree. I have tipped the driver who picked me up at the hotel, the bag drop person, the caddie, the cart girl and the club cleaning people. Not nearly the same as the caddie but a couple of bucks to a 5 spot usually does it. There is a very exclusive club over near our old house called Old Memorial. It was started by the Outback guys and they only use caddies. Most were excellent golfers that moved down to FL to caddy for the winter. Most tip between 50-100 for a round.

Lot's of great info guy's, thanks. I'll be calling the course today to make arraingments and should find out if we have a caddy or fourcaddy, some details like that.

I've been blessed to play some pretty nice tracks around the country over the years, but never with a caddy, so looking forward to it. I won the prize during a benefit tournament and the guy's I took to that will get to go to Flinthills National with me. I think their more excited than I am, lol.

50% of the caddy fee is what I've generally seen. Due, call the pro shop and ask what the caddy fee is and what they expect as a range of tips. Note that the caddy fee is usually per person, so the tip for a caddy carrying two bags equals one player's caddy fee.
