Fairway Markers

Bogey was whining, er complaining that fairway markers were off on the course he played yesterday. I think it's Bogey that is off, but anyway, the course I played only had markers at 150 and they were bushes. I know many of you use a GPS or rangefinder, but for those who don't - what type of markers do you prefer - those rounded ones in the ground, stakes on the edge of the fairway, big stakes in the middle of the fairway, markers on sprinkler heads or bushes? Also, do you think that as GPS's become more prevalent, courses will do away with markers entirely?

First off I wasn't whining, ok maybe borderline whining. Secondly when there is a sprinkler head one pace away from the 150 yard marker that says 141 I have to believe one of the two are off. Then the tee markers on one hole were 20 some yards off. I guess it's just more reason for a GPS/rangefinder that way I know where I'm at.

As for your questions I prefer the posts in the middle of the fairway or sprinkler heads. Of course that is if all of these measurements are correct and accurate.

I like the posts in the middle of the fairway too, if, as bogey said, they are accurate. You are very unlikely to hit one, plus it gives you a target to shoot at when it's hard to tell exactly where to aim. It would be nice if the course put a post at 250 as well, especially on par fives, but I've only seen 150 posts. Other yardages are usually marked on the cart path on the courses I play. Most courses have a 150 bush or similar. I never did like searching around for sprinkler heads but up until about 10 years ago, I had no choice.

I use the posts more as targets, since I have a GPS and rangefinder.

Wanna bet? I can hit them, cart signs or even hazard markers. My friends think it's quite funny.

I prefer stakes on the edge of the fairway. I don't like searching around for sprinkler heads or the round yardage markers, and I don't like the posts in the middle of the fairway either - I've hit a few.

If I only had to rely upon a visual marker, I prefer either the pole in the fairway "150 Marker" or a white post alongside the fairway. They're not the most aesthetic things in the world, but for a quick reference, they're fine.

Next, would be the standard Red, White and Blue discs in the fairway (for 100, 150 & 200 yds. respectively) and dead last are the badges on the sprinkler heads. These are "dead last" because they are often hard to find, or simply non-existent due to repair or damage.

This is why I regard GPS as one of the best "golf" inventions ever created.

why do you assume it was Bogey that's off and not the course? Have you been there?

jeaccatty 09-11-2009 08:19 PM

I like the edge posts along with sprinklers marked. The two courses I play the most have these and mark everything. 50, 100, 150, 200 and 250. Not always sure of accuracy, but I'll let everyone know when I get my new OnPar unit, lol.

I've come close to hitting one, but still have yet to do so. I still prefer them in the middle of the fairway for a visual.

I like sprinkler heads with yardages. Except when I can't find one. But what really gets me angry is when some sprinkler heads are marked and some are not. Then I finally find the sprinkler head but it doesn't have anything on it.

I am starting to use GPS more and more now, but I will still usually double check with a sprinkler head.

Dent - The real question is why you assume you should take anything I say seriously.

To be honest, it sounded like you were serious in your first couple statements of the original post, and by bogeys post it seems he thought the same thing too.

I would say it's because you're all men, well Dent is a boy, but Gasman confuses you guys at times too so it can't be because I'm a woman.

I like them off to the side, I dont pay attention to them anymore. They always seemed way off and my GPS and rangefinder seemed to back that up.

if you were joking imply it next time. This is a forum, we don't know the tone of your post.

Guys, if you haven't noticed, Diane never says anything mean or rude to people here. She's pretty Pollyanna.

If there is something in one of her posts that seems like she might be insulting someone, it's a pretty safe assumption that she is teasing.

I don't care where they place the markers, as long as they are visible to the naked/corrected eye, and some what accurate. Center of the green is the yardage target for most markers, and usually accurate only if the pin is cut in the middle.

The course I am playing today has a par three that shows 165 from the tips, to the center of the green, on an in ground marker. My GPS will tell me it is is 156 to the center of the green from the tips. I have paced it off before, and it works out to be about 160 yards. I will use my 150 yard club, and be in the center of the green, if the pin is cut there. If the the pin is cut long or short from the tips, I will make a club adjustment.

History on this par 3. Years ago the green was rebuilt after a big flood. The tee box yardage markers were never adjusted. Neither was the score card. A few years ago 8 power lines were run across the teeing area, which might now be a problem for the GPS. Since I have played this hole a few hundred times, I know I can reach it with my 150 club, because it is down hill from the tee boxes. The local mens' golf team know all this, and when a visiting team plays, they usually miss the green long. Home field advantage I suppose. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/biggrin.png

My course has plaques in the fairway for 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 on all holes except the par 3's. They have the actual numbers engraved, not just colors. On the par three holes they have custom yardages that apply to the particular hole. They were mostly paid for by the Men's Club at Foothills. As a non-profit club playing on a public course, we have to use any leftover dues money for something that doesn't result in an overall profit to the club, so we have gotten in the habit of putting it back into our golf course.

On holes where it's warranted, we also have 225 and 250 markers. We even have one at 300 on 2 holes to tell players to just hit the ball, instead of standing around waiting when they can't get within 50 yards of the green. All are measured by laser to the center of the green. There are also a few that give carry yardages from the fairway or tee for fairway bunkers. All of these markers are dead accurate, set by a professional crew with commercial lasers.

As far as visibility, when you look at the course on Google Earth, you can see these markers. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/biggrin.png
