I believe both Mickelson & Sergio have chipped while on a green. Those are 2 I know of, surely there have been other pro's.
Snedeker did it at Augusta I believe.

Mickelson is pretty amazing at it. Both times I've seen him do it, he nearly holed out.

If you are stubbing the club into the ground before or after you make contact then you are not chipping correctly. A short chip off the green should not do any serious damage.
I agree - but how many golfers that you see on the course would you trust to do it correctly? Hell, note my handicap - I'm as likely to oopsie as hit it clean. And I've seen MUCH worse duffers on the course than me - I shudder at the thought of the gouges they'd leave in the putting surface.

Chip with the same stroke you use to putt with, you don't stub your putter do you?

Never done it, but if I had to go over a bunker or some rough I would have no problem doing so. If I take a divot I'll repair it, but as I said, in close to 20 years I've never done it and likely won't ever have to.

It doesnt happen often, but Ive been instances where chipping on the green is a smarter shot than a putt.
If any greenskeeper/marshal chewed me out and asked me to leave the course for chipping on the green, you can bet that would be the last time Id play that course.
Its pretty ridicules that they would be that anal about the greens (no worse than ball marks, IMO).
And I'm sure that he would be glad to see the last of you...

And a divot is significantly worse than a pitch mark.

can anyone take a picture of a green where you would need to chip? I just haven't seen one yet. A short chip is not THAT destructive but you have to catch some some grass for it to be affective...don't you? Seriously just asking. I never saw anyone do it yet.

whoa...never saw a green like that. Out here you can have a long putt and it may have a serious 2 way break but I've never played one where the fringe cut through the middle of it.
