To play competitively or not.

I just resigned from a Monday AM men's golf league I played in for the past 4 years. It's about 30 guys, and we played various games each week, as odd-even, red-white-blue, 2BB of 4 and so on. The bet was $5 per man and we paid 2 places.

I found that I did not like the competition aspect of it, whenever you hit a bad shot, you felt like you were letting your teamates down, and it would affect my play. I find I prefer to play with a few friends, and if we play for anything, it's a few beers. This way, you just play your game.

Anyone else in Paradise feel this way?

Do you compete? - The Hackers Paradise

I like to play in the some charity events through out the year. One of my favorites is for juvenile diabetes. A bunch of us even have our own charity get together that includes a form of golf, much like the old sheep herders did way back when.

I belong to a mens league, but I am not a regular attendee to their tournaments. They have 12 tournaments a year, and I probably show up at 2 or 3 of them. It just depends which course they are using that month. If it it one of the higher end courses I will attend. My home course's men's league is not very competitive unless you are a golfer with creative ideas on handicaps, and about rules interpretation.

No, me and my golf swing against the golf course, while meeting new folks is good enough for me. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...lies/clapp.gif

Surely you aren't the only one who screws up a shot every now & then? I wouldn't worry about it & conitnue to play in the league if you enjoy it.

I prefer to play with friends rather than in the league, but not for the same reasons. I just don't enjoy playing with some of the women in the league - they're slow, they don't know the etiquette or they want to boss me around. I'm not a big fan of being bossed around.

Really? http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/biggrin.png

I haven't played anything competitive (or even semi-competitive) since about 2000 or so. About the only thing I'd be interested in anymore is a fun BB outing or maybe someplace that does nite-lite golf - that's fun http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...ies/act-up.png

I would love to play competitively. I just don't hit the ball far enough.

How is your short game?

One of my goals is to be able to compete competitively, and do fairly well.

We'll see how it goes

I like competition. For some reason, it sharpens my game. I had my best rounds this year surrounding the City Championships. Once they were over, I was back to my old hacking self...during the 5 weeks of practice and play, I was in the mid-70's to low 80's.

I have played in lots of scrambles, so hitting a bad shot there just doesn't bother me. If I hit a bad shot and it hurt the team, it means that 3 other guys hit poor shots as well. It is nearly impossible to carry an entire team for 18 holes, they have got to help.

I'm told I have a high single digit short game, but I get tired of having to get up and down all the time because I can't reach most greens in regulation.

Do you play from the proper tee's? Take your 5 iorn distance x 36 will give you what distance you should be playing the course at. For myself thats around a 6200 yd course. I do ok up to about 6500, anything longer than that & I suffer horribly.

I did your formula and it comes out to 5000 yards. Not many courses set up for that yardage. I'm going to start a new thread because some of the other stuff I've been reading got me thinking. I play the middle tees.

Wow if thats true & you only hit your 5 iron 138 or so yards, then yes you will struggle.
