As we all know, there are people here who are always whining except when they shoot in the 70's and there are those who claim they can hit the ball a mile. There are others who are posting their true score and others who claim they suck, but really aren't that bad. Tell the truth - which one are you? Me - I'm not very good, but I've decided that while I don't totally suck - there is a lot of room for improvement. So if we ever play together and I tell you I'm not good - I'm speaking the truth.

There are over 5,000 feet in a mile. So even hitting the ball 300 yards (like we all do) is still less than 1/5th of a mile. ![]() |

Me - I'm not very good, but I've decided that while I don't totally suck - there is a lot of room for improvement. So if we ever play together and I tell you I'm not good - I'm speaking the truth. I don't lie to people, I don't embellish stories and as far as golf goes, I'm very good at the game but like everyone else there are times when I can't suck enough. My best ever 18-hole round was a 72, my best handicap ever was a 2 on the Red Course at Bethpage (blue tees), I've had several sub-par nines but if I don't practice and stay plugged in, I'm just as likely to shoot in the high 80's and even occasionally crack the north side of 90. If I had a great round, I'll tell you that and I have no problem patting myself on the back for it. But on the days that I couldn't hit a cow in the ass with a banjo, those are usually the first words out of my mouth when someone asks how I did. I don't stand on any pedestals (maybe some soapboxes from time to time), I have no "ego issues" with "how far" or "how low", I do not make up stories about how great I am nor do I make excuses for when I'm not so good. Likewise, I don't hand out phony compliments to people. If someone does or says something that truly impresses me, I'll say so, but if not, I just go about my business. I may rub some people the wrong way and I also have my fans, but the one thing they all can count on is that when they deal with me, they're dealing with the real person and there are no "onions to peel", no phoniness and I'll always give you an honest answer; In other words, "What You See Is What You Get". -JP |

I think it was Curtis Strange who said once that if you have to tell people you are good then you probably aren't very good. I never tell people I am good but I don't suck either, I can hit shots that even Tiger would be proud of one day and shoot mid 70s and then I can go out and score 89 the next day and totally stink. I don't think a player is good if they have not broken 70. Scoring in the 60s is good. I hope to get down to a zero handicap, I think that is possible and realistic for me. Everytime I start to think I am getting good I run into someone who is really good and they will show me what good really is and what I want to strive for. Having said all of that I think golf should be fun and everyone gets something different out of it. I don't play it for social reasons, I can play with anyone I don't have to be with friends. I play to get better and be as good as I can be and maybe someday go to a big amateur tournament and compete, like Senior Open qualifier or whatever.
Let me ask you all a question. Would any of you pass on a chance to play with someone who was a much better player, maybe not a pro but much better than you are, because you might be embarrassed? Or would you look at it as a learning experience or maybe a chance to see some good golf and have some fun? I have people tell me all the time that they aren't good enough to think about playing a round of golf with me and I am only a 5 handicap, that doesn't really make sense to me I guess. I am curious what you all think about that and what you would do if given a chance to play with a pro or even just a 5. |

All I care about is having fun when Im out there and I hope others have fun as well. I learned when I first started playing not to exagerate your game because one day you will have to back it up. ![]() |

I'm inconsistent to say the least. I've only broke 80 1nce, but shoot generally from 80-95 and I'm happy with that. I'll average any where from 275-300 off the T with a driver just not always straight. I don't practice at all, not enough time and quite frankly I'd rather play than practice. I'll give you a perfect example of what I mean on my last round.

When I break 80 I am happy, and played a decent round of golf. I also putted pretty well. When I break 90 I had a decent round of golf, had fun, and missed a few putts. If I don't break 90, well I still had a good time out doors. Now, those very, very few rounds where I don't break 100, which happens once, maybe twice a year usually means I had a great time celebrating something the night before. That, or the weather was extremely bad with high winds, and cold rain. When someone hooks up up with me for a round of golf, for the most part, I am going to to shoot something in the low 80s. Last week I hooked up with a guy from "My Space" visiting from Montana. He claimed in print to be a 4 hndcp. He shot a 75, I shot a 79 on my home course. I treated him to a course called "Badlands" where he shot a very high number, and left being the proverbial basket case. I shot an 82.

I'm a 25 handicap. I have a lot of flubbering around, with moments of brilliance on occasion.
I typically practice pretty hard for a weekend hack, so I will get down on myself pretty hard when I chunk a shot 10 yards at a critical time, stuff like that. My short game is decent enough, but I enjoy practicing that. Typically I card 34-37 putts in a round, I had one round with only 26. My chipping has seen drastic improvement in the last year. I still stink something awful with the driver, I just can't seem to release the tension in my body on the course. It costs me quite a bit of yardage. In a lesson, my teacher can get me to ease up, and I'll hit the ball 30 yards farther. It's frustrating. |

I am an official 11.3 handicap as of the last rating from AZGA. My really good rounds from earlier this year finally dropped off my index, so I am closer now to my actual game. I had a period where I shot a bunch of low tournament scores, but my game returned to its usual inconsistency. It took a long time for my HI to rise to where I actually am.
When people ask me what kind of player I am, I always tell them it depends on which day they catch me on. That is the absolute truth. |

I never say what type golfer I am it depends on the day as to how I play some days are OK, some are great and some makes me want to walk off in the middle of play (which I did about 6 weeks ago). I just go out and play my game and let the cards fall where they may. So if I ever get the chance to play with any of you I let you be the judge as to how I play on that day. It could be good, mediocre, great or just plain suck, but one thing we will do is have fun and good conversations.

I absolutely love it when I get hooked up with really good players because it makes me knuckle down more to keep up with them but more importantly their habits and their overall "game" wears off on me and I learn a lot from them. On a typical weekend, I'm almost always the best player in the group (I'm not bragging, it's just the way it is) and I find myself having to really try hard to shoot a good score. But when I'm lucky enough to get paired with some real "players", I shoot well without even trying because their play inspires mine. -JP |

Some of the most enjoyable and and the the best golf I have played has been playing with scratch golfers and golfers in the low digit numbers. I learn from them and one thing I have noticed they could care less about how I'm playing they are playing their game. I think the most fun I had was couple years ago got paired up with a guy and his two sons all three were scratch golfers the two sons were playing on college team and looking to go into pro golf had a great time with these guys and learned a lot. BTW my handicap averages around 12-14 |

I prefer being the less accomplished golfer in a group. It makes me focus, and play better. Watching, and playing good golf being played is what it is all about.

I will play with anyone as long as they don't mind playing with me; however, I won't do so in all situations. There is no way I'm going to play with 3 scratch golfers who are playing for money. I won't play with very good golfers in a competitive outing either because my play is going to throw them off, they'll get cranky and then I won't have fun.

Yes I do hit it longer than some on here claim they do, who cares I am an 8 because I sometimes cannot control my shots/drives like I should. Plus I have not attained the aim at the pin, precise shot caliber yet. I aim towards the pin, sometimes the ball does what I ask it to, other times I miss-hit and find myself waaaaaay off the green! I guess what gets to me is what I consider "under-playing" one's ability to appear "honest and legit" and full of false humility so that others will not roll their eye's at you while reading this. Who cares? Open invitation if yall are in Corpus Christi area come down to my club we will have some fun! Though I hope I am not overseas when you do come, cause from my limited experience the one time people actually come to play I have to leave for work............. ![]() |

To the original question, I have moments where I'm quite good and had a spell of about three years where I'd take my chances against pretty much anyone (I think my peak achievement was shooting 98, over 27 holes). Now, I don't play so much and have issues with my short game which hold me back, so I'm not so good now. I still have flashes of brilliance, but they don't last very long. I'm also with JP on the honesty front. I don't lie about scores that I've shot or shoot. I just don't see the point.
As to the other question of would I play with someone better than me? Yes. Definitely. I love playing with people who are better than I am, for exactly the reasons that JP said in his post. You learn what they do, how they deal with certain situations and you can watch how to put a really good score together. |
