Rule Quiz

I read this recently, but have never come across it. You are on the green with a 40 foot downhill putt. A significant puddle of water lies in your intended line. What do you do? Have you ever had this happen to you?

I carry a squeegie just for that purpose. I'm just guessing here but I would imagine you move your ball no closer to the hole on a line that does not traverse the puddle.

I'm gonna move the ball.

Yinekol 09-18-2009 05:48 PM

I don't know what you're supposed to do, but I'd move it. Even if it turns into more of a sidehill putt, that would still be better than going through water.

I think, but don't quote me that you get relief (well, you do get relief, I know that much) and it says something like you're entitled to move the ball to the closest spot not nearer the hole where the puddle is no longer in your way. You would have to take full relief though and your nearest spot may not be on the green. If it's not, you still place it, but you'll be chipping and not putting. It pays to figure out something like that before you pick your ball up.

It's downhill, why wouldn't the water have run off??

Dyna - Go sit in the corner and be quiet.

I think that is a totally legitimate question.http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/popcorn.gif

Of course you do - go sit wth Dyna and don't talk to me either.

Maybe the water puddle is on a plateau. It's downhill, water on a flat spot and then downhill to the hole. That's what you meant, right? hehe

Smallie is allowed to stay and play.

Lift the ball and place it on the green at the nearest spot not closer to the hole where there is no interference on either line of putt or stance or lie from the casual water. See Rule 25-1.
