Default Most Difficult Course You Have Played
What is the most difficult course you have ever played and why?

Mine would be Copperhead at Innisbrook the one featured in the Transitions Championship this last weekend. Between the length (top ten longest on the PGA) and the green hardness, it made it a LONG journey.

The hardest course i have played was the Dye Club at Barefoot in Myrtle Beach. The fairways were narrow, the course was long, there was danger everywhere, and there was about a 30mph wind that day. Made for impossible golf.

This did it for me. http://www.royalportrush.com/Played on St Patrick's Day 2006. In 40MPH head winds off the North West coast of Ireland. (Not for the faint hearted). 350 yard par 4's were playing about 800 yards long - no joke! The par 3, 14th, isn't called Calamity Corner for nothing! Have a look at it. You can download a lovely picture for your desktop wallpaper from here as well.

Hands down Royal New Kent, the course is usually ranked in the top 20 of the most difficult courses in the country. Beautiful golf course, but between the elevation changes and blind shots, it will wear you out, and then there is the fast greens....

Tiffany Greens in Kansas City. They played several Senior Tour events there. The people I went with played from the tips, so I did too. Took a score in the teens (16 or 17) on the first hole and wound up in the 130s. I almost ran out of balls. Would love to play it again but I'll play from the correct tees.

well, im really having trouble with JB's home course (Westchase) lol (j/k). im actually not sure about the most difficult course i played. one of the most brutal rounds i ever played was last year during the peak of summer where it was 100º and 99% humidity at TPC Tampa. i was freaking dying. the greens were like concrete. it was just horrible. that day really stands out for some reason. i had to stop twice that day to put a soaking wet cold towel over my head to keep from collapsing from heat exhaustion

My home course is short, but incredibly tight. DDBowdoin came down and his first nine was 58 if I remember correctly. Water on every hole and very narrow.

The hardest course I've played also happens to be in my opinion the best course I've played. Arnold Palmer designed Osage National in Osage Beach, Mo. While it left me rather frustrated it was very nice and a fun course to play. The river 9 is what really tore me up, the mountain 9 is drastically different, albeit a pretty challenging track in it's own right.

All seem to be too difficult for me. The toughest I have played are Copperhead (also played the Island Course and Highlands North and South), Torrey Pines (South), The Championship Course at the University of New Mexico, La Cantera (San Antonio, both resort and Palmer course) and all the Barton Creek Courses (Austin), Cowboys Golf Club (Dallas), Maderas Golf Club (outside San Diego), Kapalua (Bay and Plantation courses), Lahinich Golf Course (the Old Course in County Clare Ireland) and the Blue Monster. We played both Doral and La Cantera the week after PGA tournaments.

Scott,
I actually prefer the Island course at Innisbrook, but Copperhead is a beast.

That is a pretty impressive resume of courses you've played Scott!

I have been fortunate to "have" to play for work from time to time and that is how I got most of those rounds in with the added benefit that I got to expense my greenfees. All except for Maui and Ireland were work related rounds. I am also blessed to have an understanding wife that had no problem with me getting in a few rounds when we were in Maui and Ireland.

Yes it is very long and the day we played it the client insisted on playing from the back tees. I lived in the Tampa/St. Pete area for 4 years and got to play a good number of the courses there. I saw more alligators at the Innisbrook courses than all the others. Lost a couple of balls that were a little too close for me to go get them. Once we even saw one on a tee box. It was interesting to watch the staff try to get it to move along.

Wolf Creek in Mesquite, Nevada would get my vote. At 75/141 it s a bit on the tough side for me. No alligators out here, but some sizeable rattle snakes from time to time

Definitely Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park, MN for me. It's 74.4/149 from the back tees and absolutely chewed me up the time I played it. That 118 was humbling when I usually could play anywhere and be around a 90-95 at that time.

yeah, its all about club selection at some courses rather than length. That trip was full of ups and downs, a 58 on the front, 37 on the back... fun times

Hardest on paper: Ballybunion. I shot an 84 but we were blessed with a sunny, 72 degree day with only a small breeze. Now, two days later it could have been 50, rain, and 35mph gusts. If that were the case hands down Ballybunion.

Conditions: Sankaty Head - Nantuck Island

Long, and a constant wind off the water... brutal

The home course of my coach is a true challenge. The course is all bermuda. The rating is 75.3 and the slope is 144. THe length is almost 6900 yards with severe elevation. Every shot is uphill or downhill. Usually, the elevation is a one-two-three club difference.

The fairways width is average, but the rough is penal. You never have a even lie in the fairways, either above or below your feet by a minimum of four inches. In addition, you will experience numerous downhill lies. The approach shot ball flight requires the opposite of your lie 99% of the time(hook lie requiring a fade ball flight or fade lie requiring a draw ball flight).

The greens are augulated and roll around a 11-13 on the stimp meter. If you don't land the ball on the correct plateau, it is a challenge to two putt.

Every time I play this course, my entire game is tested.

Mine was hands down the Scarlet course at Ohio State- disgustingly tough. Another tough one was Fowlers Mill in Chesterland, OH. It is an old Pete Dye course- split fairways and all that fun stuff.

For sure the hardest course I've played is Poston Butte in Florence, AZ.

I played the Tips, 7282 yards (74.8/127) and all day I was having to get up and down. I shouldn't be playing from that length, but I figured what the heck, why not. One of the par 3's is 235, and I hit 5 wood into it. Also #17 is 169 yards island green par 3.

It was an amazing course, but I shot 75, only because I was getting up and down all day, and I birdied 2 of the 4 par 5s.

Well I haven't played too many different courses, but the one course I thought was a tough one is Pembroke Lakes. The fairways are pretty narrow, and most of the holes have water on one side of the fairway, which I mentioned was already narrow. Pretty tough greens too, alot of undulations and breaks. I wouldn't mind playing there again though, it was a beautiful course, just a bit pricey.
