Not a big fan of golf tantrums and it infuriates me that someone has so little control over their emotions that they'd strike the putting surface with their putter.
Which really sucks because I might be have a great peaceful round and then some adult throws a tantrum, leaves a gash in the putting green and then I'm pissed off.. There's absolutely NO excuse for this type of behavior.. If you can't keep your anger in check, than don't bother coming out to the course.. |

I think THAT is far more annoying and all too common as opposed to the one-in-a-thousand person who damages a green in anger. Anger I can understand, but I can't understand people routinely ignoring the ballmarks they produce on a daily basis - some of which qualify as "gashes in the green" - as if they were someone else's problem. In my opinion, there's absolutely NO excuse for THAT type of behavior. But I guess ahm' jus' freaky like 'dat. -JP |
I see it occassionally. If I find one, I try to repair as best I can. What I see the most are putter head indentations where some one has leaned on their putter, while waiting to putt.
Where I see the most intentional damage is on a practice green at my home course that is about 150 yards from the #4 green. Although probably not done in anger, I see divots taken in this green quite often which is because of some folks hitting to that #4 green. That same green always has a few range balls scattered around it. |
I respect everybody's opinion, this is just my .02
I am not immune to bursts of emotion, but my mother taught me to channel it in a less destructive way (her first husband was abusive, so she would not put up with any type of violent behavior from me). When you throw a fit and damage yourself or your property, I could give less of a care, but if you damage property that is not yours, that is taking it too far. If someone was playing video games with me and threw a controller because they got mad, I would make them buy me a new one while telling them how uncool that was. I have broken my own controllers before (not when my mother was around when I was younger), but I always treat other peoples stuff with respect. Tiger will hit the ground, but I am sure he would never gash a green. |
As a golfer (potential golfer) with a temper, I can tell you I've never buried my putter into a green and if I saw somebody do it I would raise hell with them. I have buried a clubhead into the rough and struck the ground in anger many times. I try to not lose my temper but often times it will build up after a few bad shots, I'll blow up and then let it go. Hopefully I don't negatively affect anybody that I'm playing with, they all seem to invite me back so I think I'm okay.

Is slamming a putter into a green some kind of epidemic, or what?
In all honesty, in the 40 years I've been playing this game, I can count on one hand the times I've seen someone actually do such a thing. Now people getting mad and swearing up a storm or throwing and slamming clubs is something different. But damaging a green is not something I've seen all that often and the reason is because most people understand that a green is a kind of "sacred ground" and no matter how mad someone gets, they know enough not to mess with a green. As I've said, I have no problem with anger, swearing, even club slamming and throwing, as long as it's a once in a while thing and not something to put up with all day long. Everybody has a breaking point and getting mad is natural when someone hits that point. -JP |

Ive seen the damage to the course and Ive seen it happen firsthand. Ive seen people throw clubs down, slam their iron into the ground (sinking the head competely in the ground) and Ive seen people throw putters in disgust.

I have never seen anyone throw a putter nor bury it in the green.

I've witnessed frustration and anxiety but I've never witnessed any anger on the golf course or wanton destruction.Guess I may be just lucky.
