On my home course which is just a 9 holer, I have found myself only using a handful of clubs. Only 1 hole I ever need to use back to back irons on. Setup goes like this
Hole 1. Driver-7 iron-putter Hole 2. Driver-PW-putter Hole 3. 3h-putter Hole 4. Driver-5w-GW-putter Hole 5. Driver-pw-putter Hole 6. 8-9 iron depending on the tee box-putter Hole 7. 6 iron-7iron-putter Hole 8. Driver-pw-putter Hole 9. 3w-3h or 5h-pw-putter I very rarely need to use most of my irons & it sucks. I have played this course in the past with just a 6iron, pw & putter & that is a lot of fun. Obviously other courses have different requirements & of course I could refrain from using driver off the tee & use a shorter club to force me to use 7-8-9 irons more often. But we all love to hit the driver even if we are bad with it. |

That's one reason I like to play longer courses. It doesn't do anything good for my scoring record, but I do get to hit every club in my bag. That's more important to me than going low in my scores. It makes the game far more interesting to me.
All said and done though - I don't really score any better (corrected for handicap) on easier courses. If anything, I rise to the challenge of playing a harder course. |

I only play one set of tees, the middle men's tees. But it's long enough, tough enough and my drives are variable enough where I usually pull out every club in my bag during a round. The one thing I would change is most of the par 3s require similar clubs, 7 or 6 iron for me. It'd be nice if there were a 130 yard hole and a 200 yard hole instead of a bunch of 160 yard holes (my home course has 27 holes, so 6 par 3s).

Occasionally, I will play with just a half set. I will carry Driver, 4,6,8,PW, SW, and putter. It makes for an easy carry and is fun to manufacture shots to the "between" distances. I also think it helps my game by forcing me to be creative. Oddly enough, I don't really see a huge difference in my scoring with the abbreviated set oo the full set.
I play so many different courses here that I do get to hit all my clubs at least every few rounds. |

I guess I could play with 2.One being a putter and the other something else.I hit em all about 20 yards anyway. ![]() Depending on what course I'm playing I may or may not use every club in my bag. Two last week when I play I think I used every club in my bag plus my brothers driver. Actually now that I think about it just about every time I play I use all my clubs. |

One of my pet peeves related to course architecture and tees is related to par 3's. If I have to use the same club on more than one par 3, either those holes were not designed properly or the dude laying out the tee markers does give a rats patooty.
The only reason the above should happen is due to wind speed and par 3 facing opposite directions. |
