I only hit a handful of drivers during a round, and it's usually the par 5's because I am greedy and want to have the option to go for it if it is a shorter par 5. I usually switch between a 3,4 or 5 iron on the par 4's for accuracy and try to leave myself inside the 150 yard range.
I usually find on courses I haven't played before irons off the tee are the way to go. When I played at Westchase with JB I think I only hit driver on 1 par 4 and it was the shortish one on the back nine when I was trying to get close to the green. |
Except for the par 3's & certain doglegs, I will use driver on every hole as I need all the distance I can get. 220-230 is my typical drive with an occasional one out to 240+. I really don't have an issue with keeping it in play either, even when they end up missing the fairway it's usually not by a lot & is playable.

I drive maybe 200 to 225 with maybe 10 yards of carry. This is as far as I can hit it straight. That's Ok 'cause I can rip it with my 3 wood and 4h. Accuracy does suffer with the long sticks though but I'm working on it. This makes me relentlessly practice the lob, chip and bump and run. On occasion I find GIR but mostly, on a 4 par, I'm close in 2 and need a chip and a putt for par. So seeing as I don't have distance...accuracy is very much in the thoughts of my game. I am certain that's where I will beat the century mark.

I will take about 250 and in the short grass any day of the year, and lately I have been getting that distance and position. I finally learned how to throttle back my driver to keep it in the short grass. My last round I managed to hit 8 of the ten fairways that I used driver on. One of the other drives was just on the edge in the rough and the other one...well lets just say I was so deep in the junk it was a safari to find it.

control, control, and accuracy!!! thats the main reason high handi s struggle(too long of driver).......cut it down to 42 and hit fairways and greens--fairways and greens
|
Fairways aren't all that important to me, but being able to find it and have a clear shot is. I always use driver unless the fairway runs out before my maximum drive does... about 250. I only hit it 220-230 on average when I make decent contact. Unfortunately I can't take something off my drive without losing form and accuracy, so I make a pretty good pass at it. I don't come out of my shoes, but I don't consciously dial it down. And I can't hit anything in the bag straighter consistently than my driver until I get down to about a 5 iron. It is what it is. http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo.../confused2.gif

my criteria:
1. goes past the ladies tees. 2. not in the woods. I'm easy to please :) |
I always go with control. I'm not by any stretch of the imagination a super consistent wear-a-single-spot-on-my-face-out-striker, so adding extra juice to the swing never helps me, EVER!
My bread and butter is a high draw, 3-5% roll-out, starting over right side/1st cut, drawing back into right/middle (hopefully). 265-275 yards total, easy but faster temp swing. Unless it's really strong winds, then I do stuff different. Only time I let the genie out of the bottle is at the range, just to see if I can one hop to where the course's ball-picker-upper can't go......though I do offer to pick those up so the range guy doesn't have to. Plus I have found that 2 tours, lots of 80lb pack hikes and bad knees mandate that even on the range I don't go all Jaime Sadlowski or I WILL REGRET it come mornin and I am only 25! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/banghead.gif (And to add this is with what I term a "sweeping" draw, but what my father calls a hook with everything but a fish attached! http://www.thehackersparadise.com/fo...es/biggrin.png) |
