A thread for stuff that doesn't necessarily need its own thread.
I've been catching up with "It's Garry Shandling's Show" on Netflix. I loved it as a kid. (My family and I watched it faithfully.) And I'm very surprised how well it holds up. (It began in '86.) Some of the references are dated, the fashion and decor is hilariously frightening, but the writing is quick, witty and fresh. I love the direct address of the audience and all-around self-conscious aesthetic. One thing that I was surprised to realize is how the show really paved the way for Seinfeld. There's the comedian lead character, his platonic girl friend, the short, angry nebbish fellow and the wacky neighbor who barges in and causes chaos. (If I didn't know this came first, I would have sworn it was a parody.) |
