Karachi's half a million chronic heroin addicts - BBC Radio 4 programme

Karachi is facing a drugs epidemic. Pakistan's sprawling port city has an estimated half a million chronic heroin addicts. The drug is cheap and easily available as it comes across the Pakistan/Afghanistan border....

Does anyone know how this heroin problem arose in Pakistan - where are the drugs coming from?

Karachi became the major port in Western Hindistan and Central Asia for the British Raj. During this time, the British Empire also traded and trafficked in opium, among other narcotics. It is safe to assume that the British empire was the first modern power to 'hook' an entire nation on a narcotic for its own benefit, eg. China. The rise of heroin addiction from opium in Karachi and Pakistan in general can be laid at the feet of the British, with collusion from the usual suspects among Muslim ranks.

Afghanistan provides the majority of the worlds Heroin, Colombia supplies the cocaine.

The United States and Europe are the biggest customers in this trade.

Whats even more interesting is that Opium production decreased by almost over 90% during the Taliban era of the 1990's and production increased ten fold in the years following post 9/11 US occupation.

There are quite a few conspiracies regarding this, but it can be certain to say that it was a means of price control and manipulation paying huge dividends to the local warlords when there was a shortage of supply and demand is always high.

Regardless, all of the heroin problems in Pakistan can be traced back to the British Empire as Usama2 has mentioned, but the blame fully lies with Afghanistan using opium as its main cash crop.

Plz beware of codeine it contains opium it could make you high
Just a side not whilst we are on the subject anything containing condeine is basically opium Ive seen many ppl get addicted on these drugs, thus leading to heroin addiction further down the line. What the availabilty of codeine based products around karachi? My thoughts are that the opium probably came from pakistans neighbour Afghanistan possibly whilst travelling through pakistan to get to europe and the america.

most probably afghanistan.
Its been suggested that when the Taliban gained control of Afghanistan they stopped Opium production and the western governments did not like this and one of the reasons they attacked Afghanistan was this. Now opium production is up again...there is a link between governments, drugs production, banks and weapons manufacturers...it all goes towards some people keeping society as it is while they profit. Foolish people think the Democratic Governments serve them and care for them and look after them...only the ruling elites care for themselves.
