Cousin Marriage?

What are your views about cousin marriage or the idea of having sex/romance with your cousin? Cousin marriage increases the chance of congenital diseases by 2% , which translates to a singificant level of genetic degeneration over a course of 5-6 generations/permutations of accumulative first cousin marriages.

Genetically , marrying the 'farthest' is the best! The farther you marry , stronger the gene pool gets.

Many Muslim cultures have this tradition of "cousin marriage" .... I think that Muslims should discourage this tradition. Well if you have a very close intimate relationship with your cousin..then go for it....but cousin marriage should NEVER be the 'preference' ...

So what are your views about cousin marriage?

sex is understood when you mentioned marriage.

I think they should have some checkups because i think it's clear that in pakistani community it might not be the wisest thing.....

We are Muslims and we don't believe in "the idea of having sex/romance" with anyone (cousin or not) without nikah (marriage).

lol - I think he means in marriage.

I think its more about keeping family respect and purdah than any scientific/romantic reasonings especially in the villages. I dont the parents bother or are completely ignorant of any potential problems. This is less of a problem in cities I assume.

Its a safe bet, you know to a great deal what you're getting yourself into. Yesterday I purchased an ittar without even opening the plastic on the packet, it was a huge risk but Alhamdulillah was wonderful. Marriage is the same way, its a huge risk, it could be wonderful or a nightmare, and you are not allowed to try before you buy. If you have options within your family then definitely exhaust them before going outside.

Did anyone go to the lecture on the subject by Mufti Zubair Butt? He was supposed to have views of the madhabs on the subject, views of the salaf and medical views. Apparently he did a lot of research http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/mash.gif
Would be nice if someone could put up some notes

But regardless, as we know, it is at least permissible or valid to have a cousin marriage so the last option on the poll shouldn't be there at all on a Muslim forum since we cannot make haraam what Allah made halal

A con of cousin marriage is you don't extend the extended family. You have the same folks to live with!

A lot of these cousin marriages I think take place because of being not Islamic prior to the marriage. Some Muslim cultures consider the cousin to be "your brother or sister" when he/she is actually non-mahrem otherwise how could you two marry!? Hence the cousin is allowed, wrongly, more access to the opposite gender cousin than should be allowed and hijab is not maintained nor sometimes even khulwah (privacy between an unrelated man and woman) which can lead to flirting, and falling in love and crushes and so forth. Because the cousin in these situations is considered brother or sister all this can go unnoticed by family. Finally, they decide to get married and announce to their parents and by that time there's nothing really the parents can do - it's too late -they are besotted with each other.

I've seen in my own family some of my cousins with other opposite-gender cousins (all have attained puberty) hold hands, greet each other with a peck on the cheek (and shake hands) actually believing they are brothers and sisters (like blood related brothers and sisters) due to culture hijacking Islam. It's a sad state of affairs.

hnmm cousin marriages...... I am OK with it.. like if I find my cousin to be more suitable for me as a wife rather than some girl outside, I would definitely go for it. You know I dont understand the West. In 1980 a Scientist comes and he literaaly forbids cousin marriages because of the defect risk, then in 2002 another guy comes and he says that the risk is reduced then NOW IN 2012 a scientist comes and he says that its all rubbish and its only a 3% chance.
In my opinion if u have a SERIOUS DISEASE going in ur family..then I personally would try to avoid it..other than that its all cool
