Default Planting an olive tree over the grave provides shade for the deceased?
Asalaamu Alaykum,

Anyone heard anything like this before? My cousins went to perform ziyarah of my grandfather's grave and they planted an olive tree next to it, saying that it will provide shade for him. Is there any reference of this is the Qur'an or Ahadeeth?

JazakumAllahu Khairan.

I don't know about this, but I always wondered if by planting a tree over the grave, you could have a nice sort of marker without it being considered "building" over the grave.

It might be from this hadith.

Ibn Abbas reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) happened to pass by two graves and said: They (their occupants) are being tormented, but they are not tormented for a grievous sin. One of them carried tales and the other did not keep himself safe from being defiled by urine. He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two parts, and planted them on each grave and then said: Perhaps, their punishment way be mitigated as long as these twigs remain fresh.

Yes, me too heard about planting a tree over the grave but don't know if it is some particular tree or any tree. It keeps shade to the graves, nests for the birds, fruit for the animals, birds.... overall it is good thing to do
