When you fly to Dhaka , the capital of Bangladesh, you will land in an airport which
is called Shah Jalal International airport. Shah Jalal refers to a sufi saint who came to Bangladesh from Yemen many centuries ago.You can find more info about this famous sufi saint in Bangladesh. -------- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shah_Jalal -------- Have you ever seen any airport named in honor of a sufi ? Howver, the airport got this name not long ago. In the beginning ,it was called Zia International airport. Zia refers to a political figure who was an ex-military officer who contributed in the war of liberation in 1971. In this link , you can find more info about this airport. ------------- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shahjal...tional_Airport ------------- In Bangladesh , you can find two strong political parties - one is BNP founded by General Zia and the other is Awami League founded by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman also is called father of nation. Both are not Islamists, rather secular parties. Anyway, there is bitter political rivalry. When Awami League came to power afer winning in the last election , they were thinking how to give a new name to this airport. They have many options to choose , since Bangladesh has many famous personalities in her glorious past. But , in a twist of luck, they have chosen the name of a sufi saint whose name draws respect even after so many centuries !! Secular politicians of Awami League have won the political game , but , I think, it is the sufi legacy of this country that has won !! Let us celebrate the Sufi heritage over all the garbage of Secularism !! |
