Default beard growing
Salam aleikum brothers and sisters

I have decided to keep my beard growing to keep with the requirements of Islam.

I was wondering if brothers have advices on how to do it. I already have a 3 weeks beard and alhamduliallah the beard is thick and generous.

However, i was wondering if :

- i have to and may defined a neck line? is it above or below the adam apple?
- do you comb up or down? when i comb it up the beard seems bigger
- do u use olive oil on ur beard?

any other advices?

I personally comb down, suits on my face. Oils can be used on beards. Mustard oil is also an option if you are sensitive to the hot climate. As olive is more preferred in cold climates.

- i have to and may defined a neck line? is it above or below the adam apple? You need not to define the neck line, just let it grow n make sure u trim the hair above the jaw bones to look tidy.Try to avoid using blade on cheeks else the hair over there grows lil bushy.

- do you comb up or down? when i comb it up the beard seems bigger You can comb it either way but at the end u should comb it downwards to give u nice look.

- do u use olive oil on ur beard? You can use any oil. U see which one suits u.

Some babies when they go in the hands of a man who has a beard, sometimes they start crying and stay quite if the man has no beard. One buzurg was questioned about this and he replied that when the person without beard carries the baby , the baby thinks its my mama !!

To the OP,

olive oil, a comb on a slightly wet beard works wonders, man.

Just one question: what do you mean by "just let it grow n make sure u trim the hair above the jaw bones to look tidy" ?

thanks

Walaikum Asalaam WaRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh,

First of all, , congratulations on your (very correct) decision to stop shaving your beard as per the order of our beloved Prophet .

I made the same decision a few months ago and I haven't looked back.

Regarding defining the neck line... you would probably hear different answers on that but my understanding has come to be that you should basically not take off ANY of the beard as much as possible... unless it is to make 2 uneven sides even, etc. So, keeping that in mind, one should make the neck-line very close to where their beard naturally ends, so as to tidy up the edges while at the same time removing a very, very minimal amount of beard. I hope that makes sense. Basically just edge it along the natural growth to tidy it up and don't shave off any extra to meet any other criteria (such as your barber or friends etc saying "oh come on it'll look so much nicer if you make the neck line on the jaw instead of on the neck")... I'm sure you get the idea.

Combing down is the natural way I would assume. I know what you mean by the beard looking bigger when combed up (or in opposite direction of growth, which is usually up). I have so much fun doing that myself. However, I believe it should be combed in a natural way, which is usually down for majority of brothers. give it time and your beard will be way bigger to where you won't feel the need to comb it up to make it look bigger.

Olive oil - this is on my to-do list, , but I can't tell you from experience. I have read in different places that Rasul-Allah used to put olive oil in his beard (and I think hair also), so that should be reason enough for us to do it. I do use black seed oil (also mentioned in many ahadith, I believe, though not sure if the Prophet himself used it or not)... and, Masha'Allah, black seed oil has done wonders for my beard. It makes it nice, thick, and black. The smell is not the best so I usually try to put it overnight 2-3 times a week (hair & beard) and wash it out in the morning shower.

Other advice:

Just stick with it brother! Alhamdulillah, thank Allah swt that He gave you the understanding to comprehend the fact that being a muslim man = not shaving your beard. That it is not "one of those Sunnahs" which is "good to follow but no harm if you don't". Though I only started keeping beard a few months ago as I said, I could never imagine shaving it now, and I laugh (or cry?) at my old self who used to shave it. So, I too can never, ever, ever thank Allah swt enough for blessing me with this understanding.

That being said, just hold on tight if it ever gets rough. You may have friends, family, co-workers, and just random people giving you 'looks' or making comments like "that's a messy beard come on trim it just a little bit, it will look so much better", etc... Insha'Allah always keep in mind that you're trying to look good in front of Allah and doesn't matter if people think it looks good or not.

At the same time, don't go all "messy bushy man" either. Subhan'Allah, I went through that when I first started growing my beard... I didn't want to touch it at all. I just wanted to keep shaving my mustache every couple of days and not touch the beard at all... to where it was going "all over the place". Eventually I had to make a compromise between what I thought was pleasing Allah and at the same time what I thought had become necessary to maintain ties of friendship & kinship (also important in Islam), so I went to my barber and explained to him that I'm growing a full beard, don't want to do anything to it really, so just do the bare minimum to fix it up without taking much off. Alhamdulillah he understood and tidy'ed it up just a bit, and since then I either do it myself or get it done from my barber (ideally) every 2 weeks or so. Just a quick edge up, snip a few hair hanging out here and there, take off the mustache, even out any unevenness if needed, and that's about it. Keeps the beard maintained and looking very "muslim'ish" at the same time.

A little less than a month ago, I had to actually get it trimmed with a trimmer (#4) because it was kind of going all over the place and my barber suggested to let him run a #4 on it and then Insha'Allah it will grow evenly and we can fix it again the same manner in another month or two.. so I let him do it. And honestly I felt kind of bad because it took off quite a bit (by my standards at least)... but yes, it evened it out really good Masha'Allah and now it's growing to the next level Insha'Allah. I was expressing to a brother about feeling bad about trimming my beard like that and he said "well you let it grow for so long and now this nice beard came out from under all that and it will keep growing like that so consider it a gift from Allah instead of feeling bad"... so that kind of helped me put it into perspective and I thanked Allah swt.

May Allah swt keep you and all of us steadfast in our iman and all that is good, and may He grant us all the tawfeeq to stay away from all which is bad & evil. Ameen.

JazakAllah and please keep me in your dua's brother!

1) It could be that those babies were scared of heavily bearded men.
2) It's not allowed in Islam to put others down just to make yourself feel better.

This thread reminds me of this poem!

Beauty of the Beard

I came to eat dinner in my halls of residence one day last year when two sisters started laughing at me; I had some food stuck in my beard. They went on to innocently and honestly mock my beard saying it was messy, unnatural and unhygienic. Little did they know the rage that I felt as a result of this and I channeled this rage by unleashing my anger through my pen and out came this poem.

I performed this poem in the Leicester University/DMU Islamic Societies and Eid Celebration and it was received with much laughter and acclaim - Alhamdulillah. Due to popular demand and many requests I have decided to type my poem up and email it to my friends in Islam. Let me remind you all not to be offended as this is no fatwa or religious statement - just a funny poem that spontaneously was produced as a result of my unfortunate experience...
Tushar (12th March 2001)

"Glorified be He who beautifies women with long locks of hair
And Men with long beards
There is beauty in the beard
Aye, there is beauty in the beard!

When the lion roars all the animals submit
For the lion is the king of the jungle
The lion with its glorious mane
And a Muslim man grows his mane in pride
Showing the rest of humanity that he is to be respected
Can one imagine a lion without its mane?
Nay, thou canst not!
Then imagine a man without his beard

Woe to worldly women who mock the beards so!
Desiring husbands with clean shaven faces
Woe to women who mock the Prophets Sunnah
In the name of hygiene, neatness and smooth texture
Indeed the women of this world cannot like the beard
But she who wants Paradise adores the beard!

A beard is a gift given to man
Something only he can grow; a woman never can!
When he ponders, he gently strokes it;
When he eats, it stores food;
When he is with kids, they play with it adoringly;
When he is with his wife, she fondles it lovingly;
When the enemy see it, fear is struck in their hearts!
Ah! there is indeed beauty in the beard!

All the Prophets had beards - yes they did!
Muhammad had a beard - so big! so big!
All the companions had beards - o yes! o yes!
All the sages had beards - I know! I know!
All the wise have beards - tis true! tis true!
All the pious have beards - you see! you see!
All the Muslims have beards!? - if only! if only!

Who did not have beards? The kafirun!
Who had clean shaven faces? The kafirun!
Who grew their moustaches? The kafirun!
"And what did our Prophet order?" I here you ask
He ordered us to lengthen the beard and trim the moustache!
Lengthen the beard and trim the moustache!
What greater reason that this can there be
The fact that our Prophet told us to see
That we make ourselves appear to the world
As full bearded men with honour untold

O Muslim brother! Why do you desire to look like a woman
When your blessed facial hair is the differece between you and the opposite gender?
O poor Muslim brother! Why do you imitate the kafir
Instead of following the Prophet of Islam?
O silly Muslim sister! Why are you so blind?
Infatuated with Bollywood actors who have no mind!
O wretched sister! Are you not scared of your choice?
You would rather have a feminine monkey instead of an exalted manly ape!

So indeed I love my beard
And adore the curls and tangles
Which no oil, gel or superglue can ever straighten
My glorious long, curly, messy, fluffy beard!
The playhouse for kids;
The envy of Malaysian people
And the beloved of Allah!
I maybe rejected by worldly women because of this hair on my face
But who care! For my Mum loves it and she puts all such sisters to disgrace!
Be patient Muslim brothers, who shun the trendy look for a Prophetic pose
Paradise with the wide eyed Houris is our final abode!!!!!"

I was listening to one of Maulana Yusuf Ludhianvi's bayan yesterday, and he said that there is a shaykh in Madina who sees the Prophet regularly in his dreams. Once the shaykh asked the Prophet if he answers the salam of those men who shave their beards. And the Prophet replied 'NO'.
