Nullifying Bayat

http://discussworldissues.com/forums...lies/salam.gif

if you take bayat with a sheikh and join a tariqa, then leave it after some time, will there be any adverse effects on your deen or iman other than the natural effect of leaving good company...will this be considered fisq o fujoor in itself?

Here is a related Q&A from AskImam.org (my underlining):

Question

Asalamu Alaikum wa rahmatullahi-wa-barakatuhu,

A few weeks back I visited a masjid and attended a gathering of dars of a famous scholar (I do not remember the name but I am sure it ends with Makki and the scholar was a student of Hadhrat Shaykh al-Hadith Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya).

After the dars he told some points regarding bayat and then said that the imam of that masjid (Masjid Falah, F.B. Area, Karachi), son of Mualana Yousuf Ludhianvi, will be giving bayat to people who wish to take it..then after a long cloth was extended whom people wishing to take bayat touched and also it was announced that those who cannot touch the cloth can verbally repeat the words recited by Imam..

I verbally recited the words and accepted the oath but I could not even once visit the Sheikh for guidance neither do I know him (I had asked the Mufti of our locality Masjid, as i trusted and had attachment to him, for bayat but he said he wasn't given authority to bayat).

Now I am situated in Dubai, UAE and cannot contact him as I do not know his number (neither his name).

My questions are as follows:

1. Is my Bayt valid as i had doubts regarding my intentions at that time and even now (i recited the words verbally but I was in doubt to whether I am confident in the sheikh and will I be able to follow his guidance) ?

2. Is it possible to change ones spiritual guide (after bayat is taken) to someone else whom one can easily contact (or for any other reason)..?

3. Can I take a second bayat online from Mufti Ebrahim Desai whom I can contact through email as well (also becuase I have been reading his fatawas since a long period) ?

JazakAllah Khairun

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

Assalaamu `alaykum waRahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

1. The Bay‘ah that you took was valid. However, if you feel that you will not benefit from the Shaykh whom you took Bay‘ah with due to the lack of congeniality and rapport, you may annul the Bay‘ah. The method of annulling the Bay’ah is to make a firm intention of terminating your pledge and spiritual relationship with the Shaykh (Anfās Isā, pg. 53).

2. You should look for another Shaykh whom who have confidence and affinity with and take Bay‘ah with him. It is extremely important to choose a spiritual guide with whom you have some congeniality. The underlying reason of taking Bay‘ah and choosing a Shaykh is to have him guide you in all of your spiritual and religious matters. This can only be accomplished if you maintain a persistent and close bond with your Shaykh. Many times the Shuyūkh will even refuse to take Bay’ah from certain individuals due to the lack of affinity and familiarity between the person and the Shaykh. Therefore, before taking Bay‘ah with any Shaykh, you should ensure that you feel comfortable with him as your Shaykh and he feels comfortable having you as his Murīd. Only after establishing such a link and bond should you take formal Bay‘ah.

3. In order to consider you quest for Bay‘ah and spiritual guidance, kindly forward some information and personal details about yourself; who you are, what you do, what your intentions for taking Bay‘ah are etc.

And Allah knows best

I am pretty sure that the mufti would have mentioned it, had it been fisq and fujur... And of course he wouldn't have mentioned nullifying the bay'at as a solution, if it would make the questioner into a fasiq. Wa Allahu a'lam...

So this 'bayat' thing, are you pledging your alliegiance to a sheikh?

so there is no need to inform the shaykh you wish to leave him?

I read somewhere that the reason for not informing the shaykh of one's leaving is because it might hurt his feelings etc.

As long as you keep the respect of your shaikh in your heart and refrain from saying bad things against him, nothing will happen, neither is it sin or fisq.

I often hear of Mashaykh who have some pretty negative things to say about the murids that leave them

Bayat can not be taken lightly, still in religion it is only Mustahab, neither Farz nor wajib.
There can be many reason for breaking this relationship:
1) You did bayat but later on found out that the aqaed of the Shaikh were not correct; Breaking such a bayat is necessary
2) You found out that you have no munasibat with the Shaikh and therefore you can not benefit from him;In such cases it is better to find another shaikh for yourself,as the purpose of Bayat is to learn how to please Allah swt,Shaikh per se is not the objective of Bayat
3)You stayed with a Shaikh for a considerable amount of time, and still you can,t find any positive change in yourself (provided you have followed his instructions ),in such cases you can leave this Shaikh, but you must respect him all your life.
4)You are bayat to a Shaikh but for some reason you can not communicate with him for long periods of time,in such cases it is better to find a Shaikh close to you or more easily contactable. In General,if you can not communicate with your Shaikh for longer than 3 months in a row, even by mail, that will technically mean he is not contactable in your case.
There may be other reasons too,if one is honest to himself and is not in habit of breaking bayat and doing it again with a new shaikh,he can easily assess his situation and make a decision.
If bayat is broken for valid reasons,no harm will come, otherwise at least in the path of sulook this person will be unsuccessful (illa MashaAllah). It is not a sin of any degree in itself though, such an aqeeda is 'Mubalegha fid din'
It is better to inform the shaikh in a very humble way,but if one does not inform him for any good reason, that is right too,in any case one should keep his respect in mind and never speak against him

Brother, are you confusing the bayah to a shaykh with the baya` to a khalifah?
Breaking the latter is the fisq you mentioned.

and Allah knows best.

Tariqah is another term used for Tazkiyyah/Tsawwuf/Sulook.
