Why did the prophet have like 12 wives, while telling others to have max. 4 wives?

And why did his wives, accuse him for not dealing equally with them?

This is one of the hadith:

Narrated 'Urwa from 'Aisha: The wives of Allah's Apostle were in two groups. One group consisted of 'Aisha, Hafsa, Safiyya and Sauda; and the other group consisted of Um Salama and the other wives of Allah's Apostle. The Muslims knew that Allah's Apostle loved 'Aisha, so if any of them had a gift and wished to give to Allah's Apostle, he would delay it, till Allah's Apostle had come to 'Aisha's home and then he would send his gift to Allah's Apostle in her home. The group of Um Salama discussed the matter together and decided that Um Salama should request Allah's Apostle to tell the people to send their gifts to him in whatever wife's house he was. Um Salama told Allah's Apostle of what they had said, but he did not reply. Then they (those wives) asked Um Salama about it. She said, "He did not say anything to me." They asked her to talk to him again. She talked to him again when she met him on her day, but he gave no reply. When they asked her, she replied that he had given no reply. They said to her, "Talk to him till he gives you a reply." When it was her turn, she talked to him again. He then said to her, "Do not hurt me regarding Aisha, as the Divine Inspirations do not come to me on any of the beds except that of Aisha." On that Um Salama said, "I repent to Allah for hurting you." Then the group of Um Salama called Fatima, the daughter of Allah's Apostle and sent her to Allah's Apostle to say to him, "Your wives request to treat them and the daughter of Abu Bakr on equal terms." Then Fatima conveyed the message to him. The Prophet said, "O my daughter! Don't you love whom I love?" She replied in the affirmative and returned and told them of the situation. They requested her to go to him again but she refused. They then sent Zainab bint Jahsh who went to him and used harsh words saying, "Your wives request you to treat them and the daughter of Ibn Abu Quhafa on equal terms." On that she raised her voice and abused 'Aisha to her face so much so that Allah's Apostle looked at 'Aisha to see whether she would retort. 'Aisha started replying to Zainab till she silenced her. The Prophet then looked at 'Aisha and said, "She is really the daughter of Abu Bakr." (Bukhari, Book #47, Hadith #755)

there's a difference between dealing equally between wifes and loving them
you can't control who you love more and He :saws: loved Aisha RA more

Every Hadith has its own context, and every action of our beloved Rasoolullah http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif is by Allah's will. The Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif doesn't act or do things on his own fancies, its mentioned in the Quran. All these doubts you are having is due the whispering of Shaytaan. I have similar doubts, believe me, I have had even worse doubts, but then i realized its due to My own lack of understanding of the Deen. Once I asked about this to a scholar, he said that Prophet SAW didn't ask the people to give him SAW gift when he SAW is in Ayisha's (RA) house. It was just people who started to do so. Now when the people come and give gift, it is not a nice thing to ask them to give him SAW gift when he is in house of other wives. I dont think anyone of us would do for we wont find it descent and so why would Prophet SAW would do so. Allahu alam

Also I realized like the other brother amr123 that this is from shaitan trying to remove the azmat of beloved Prophet SAW from our hearts taking advantage of ignorance. Khair oce we trust Allah SWT and His Prophet SAW more and love them more, these sort of things will go away eventually iA.

The Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif was the most just and Allah fearing amongst us, he was never unjust to any of his wives.

Our mother Aisha was extremely beloved to the Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif, and no doubt when she got involved in these rivalries she had the ability to silence the others; not just because of her love for the Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif and vice-versa, but because she was very eloquent in speech; in fact not too dissimilar to her father Abu Bakr.

On one such occasion Aisha said something whereby the other wives were silenced and they could not think of a reply to her. The Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif observing this simply said, 'Afterall she is the daughter of Abu Bakr'.

Treating someone differently is not always the same as being unjust or unequal, and certainly this was not the case with the Holy Messenger http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif and his wives. We can be equal but we are not identical.

12-13 is nothing, Huzoor salllahu alayhi wa sallam can have up to 100 wives or even 100+, he has the strength for them and he has the ability to deal justly with all even though he may have more than 100+ wives no problem he will deal justly with all and he has the strength for all. you are talking about a person who had the strength of 100 men of jannah, its no joke.

For the rest of us poor folk the max we can handle is 4 after that physically and mentally we cannot handle it, its wife overload. Now a days most can barely handle 1, sometimes 2-3, rarely 4.

Huzoor salallahu alayhi wa sallam never did unjust treatment to wives, you are mistaken. Go back to your teacher and request him to go over the lessons to you again.

There is ikhtilaaf difference of opinion amongst Ulama about who he salallahu alayhi wa sallam loved more, Hazrat Aisha (ra) or Hazrat Khadija (ra), they present proofs for each case. Its an interesting discussion, you should look into it and enjoy it. Its something to have interest in and enjoy and take lessons from to see how Rasoolullah salallahu alayhi wa sallam loved his wives and the words he used to show his affection for his wives - that is a real love story and real way to love wife, the best example for mankind.

Brother, I feel that the somewhat stern response received from a few brothers was because of the initial tone of your opening post. It sounded derogatory to the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam). I am not saying that you meant disrespect but the way it is written can make one feel that this is so.

My english is very bad, sorry. So I'm sorry if you misunderstood anything. I respect the prophet (saw). But I never read anywhere that I can't question the history of Islam, and the ways of the prophet.

Perhaps you could answer me, and guide me? Or no, let's just downgrade Caliph, because he talks stupid.

Ok it could be i misunderstood since you say your english is weak. Ofcourse you can question the history of Islam, but when doing so one has to do it with outmost humbleness.


About the wives, The hadith you quoted doesn't imply the partiality of the Prophet http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif towards any wife, but rather it shows the healthy competition between the Prophet'shttp://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif wives. Thats why our Rasoolullah http://discussworldissues.com/forums...ilies/pbuh.gif was quite and took it as humour.

"i would like to know the wisdom behind why rasoolullah (salallahu-alaihiwasallam) was allowed 12 wives, when islam permits others to have only four wives?" what i mean is, you could put this post foward in a nice way without angering anybody on the forum, also i dont think ant of the wives of rasoolullah (salallahu-alaihiwasallam), who was the most just of creation, ever accused him of treating them unjustly. remember we're discussing the most noble, justful, honourable creation ever created! so we should conduct the discussion with utmost respect and love.

We have sent our messenger with all evidence of truth, and though them we bestowed revelation from on high and (thus gave you) in the balance (to judge right and wrong)
so that people maybe firm in justice; and we bestowed (on you) from on high (the ability to make of iron, in which there is awesome power as well as many benefits for mankind.

When they asked why, he replied: "I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (by Allah)."

Bukhari. Volume 3, Book 31, Number 145:
Narrated 'Abdullah(ra):
The Prophet fasted for days continuously; the people also did the same but it was difficult for them. So, the Prophet forbade them (to fast continuously for more than one day). They slid, "But you fast without break (no food was taken in the evening or in the morning)." The Prophet replied, "I am not like you, for I am provided with food and drink (by Allah)."
