Well personally I would give an old chum a nice bottle of 5 year old sour mashed Scotch whiskey but since he is a Muslim of course I won't recommend it.

But how about a brand new Qur'anic Android tablet? It may be a bit pricey but as they say "you can't put a price on love" .Personally I think Shaykh's should upgrade now a days. Although I still prefer paper books.
But all joking aside this is like the perfect gift for a Shaykh and you can throw the chocolate in for good measure

What?! No one suggested attar?!!

What would happen to this forum without me?

Anyways, one guy gave Mufti Palanpuri [damath barakatuhum] an iPad years back when it was still new in the market...so thats' another suggestion.

And he loaded it with 100's of books too, I know quite a few Ulamah's who really like their iPad - they find it very useful for reading & researching. And I'm talking about the really 'traditional' ones - who are not very well versed with tech...

What's an Android by the way?

You can always give money, too. He's happy to receive a gift from you and he buys what he needs/likes.

Win/win.

Andorid is an OS (Operating System) like Windows or Mac. It is just the primary software used to run any computer. Android is just specifically designed to be used on phones and tablets although you can use it on a full fledge PC.
Android can be put on any device as long as it is a computer and it is open source so you can modify it whenever and however you please making it far more versatile than an Ipad or Iphone. There is even a gaming console coming out based on the Android OS. That is just how versatile it is

Mashed Potatoes then or some healthy boiled vegetables with a pinch of Salt and a pinch of ground black pepper (no butter or margerine)

Sudoku got the idea of what I was trying to sayAlhamdulillah. I can assure you that home made food as a gift to our Shaykh and their family is a good gesture.
Alhamdulillah, I have on occasions given my sheikh Chocolates, Tofeefee, Churwa/murku . I know my sheikh would love to have Tim Horton's French Vanilla coffee granules. And carbonated drinks are one of his favourite.

In fact one day one of his student gave him 2 tomatoes and a packet of mushroom, and he said this is one of the best way of giving gift. i.e what you buy for yourself, just share some with him too

Every one is different. judge your sheikh's mizaaj and give him what will lighten up his heart.

...... Itr is a gift thats always appreciated.... as long as it's some thing nice though. Although he may appreciate the gesture, no-ones' going to be thrilled to receive some synthetic soap smelling perfume. If he has children, then it's nice to give something for them instead.
And I suggested it too! On the first page.
