IRAQ

In continuing this journey and moving across to Iraq, I state that through sheer grace of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) I have had the honour of sitting with the Muhaddith of Iraq, Shaikh Subhi ibn Jasim al-Samura’ee who I have met on many occasions and amongst other works that I have studied and obtained Ijazah from the Shaikh is the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari (RA) after having read/heard the whole text whilst in his company.

Shaikh Subhi Samura’ee narrates back to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) through 12 intermediaries and this is the Isnaad:

He narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Abdul Kareem Sa’iqah

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Yusuf Husain Khanpuri

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Nadheer Husain Dehlawi

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Shah Mohammed Ishaq al-Dihlawi

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Shah Abdul Aziz al-Dihlawi

Who narrates to Kitab al-Hajj from Shah WaliUllah al-Dihlawi

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abu Tahir Madani al-Kurdi

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Hasan Ujaymee

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Easa Tha'alabi al-Ja'fri

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ahmed ibn Khaleel Subki

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Najm Mohammed al-Gheeti

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Zakariyyah al-Ansari

Who narrates much of the text from Ibn Hajr al-Asqalaani

YEMEN

Moving to the blessed land of Yemen, I continue this journey looking at the Asaneed that connect us through many of the celebrated Ulama to Imam al-Bukhari and ultimately to the greatest of creation, Sayyiduna wa Habeebuna Mohammed (salahu alayhi wasalam). Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) blessed me with the opportunity to study many texts with one of the leading Muhaditheen of Yemen who himself stems from a family of Muhaditheen. Shaikh Mohammed ibn Qasim al-Washali (HA). I am thankful to Allah that he has also granted me a very special connection with Shaikh who I have had the pleasure of hosting as a personal guest for numerous days and I have studied and obtained Ijazah from the Shaikh in the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari (RA) on more than one occasion after having read/heard the whole text whilst in his company.

Shaikh Mohammed ibn Qasim al-Washali narrates back to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) through 13 intermediaries[I] and this the Isnaad:

He narrates the complete Sahih from Qasim Ismael al-Washali

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ismael Mohammed al-Washali[II]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdur Rahman al-Qudaymee
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdur Rahman Abdullah al-Ahdal
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdur Rahman Sulayman al-Ahdal[III]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Sulayman Yahya al-Ahdal[IV]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ahmad Muhammed al-Ahdal
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Yahya Umar al-Ahdal
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abu Bakr Ali al-Ahdal
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Yusuf Batah al-Ahdal
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Tahir Husain al-Ahdal[V]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdur Rahman Ali al-Zubaidi
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Mohammed Abdur Rahmah Sakhawi[VI]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani [VII]

[I] He narrates through dozens of paths, but this is the most complete in terms of aural transmission.
[II] Three generations of descendants narrating from each other which is very common in Yemen and similar to the family of Shah Waliullah (RA) and Musnid al-Dunya Abdul Hay Kittani (RA).
[III] He is al-Wajih Abdur Rahman ibn Sulayman ibn Yahya ibn Umar ibn Maqbool al-Ahdal (AH). The Umdat (pillar) of Riwayah in Yemen and would be similar in this sense to Shah Wali Ullah in India.
[IV] The father of al-Wajih Abdur Rahman (RA). He also read it with other shoyoukh with a similar path to the one we mentioned previously and I will write this path in future postings of Yemeni Ulama.
[V] The Ahdal family is known for their piety and service to Hadith as can be seen from this isnad.
[VI] What is established is that it was not the whole text, but most of it however this is disputed.
[VII] This Isnaad up to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) is Musalsal (continuous) with Yemeni narrators apart from Imam al-Sakhawi.

MOROCCO

Traveling again we come to another of my Shoyoukh that I have had the great privilege of traveling to numerous times as well as hosting in my present country of residence, and in which time I was able to study several texts of Maliki Fiqh in addition to the entire Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari. Shaikh Mahammed[I] ibn Mohammed al-Hujoojee (HA) who is over 90 years old and currently resides in al-Jadida. We ask Allah to preserve him for the Ummah.

Shaikh Mahammed ibn Mohammed al-Hujoojee narrates back to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) through 13 intermediaries and this is the Isnaad:

He narrates the complete Sahih from Mohammed al-Hujoojee[II]
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Mahammed Mohammed Ganoon
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ahmed Ahmed Banani
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdul Ghani Mujadidi[III]

[I] Spelt with a fatha which is not the usual pronunciation. This formation is common in the countries of Maghrib such as Morocco, Mauritania and Libya, otherwise rarely used.

[II] This is his father (RA). His name was Mohammed, but he named his son Mahammed (my Shaikh) and this maybe in following the pronunciation of his Shaikh's name who was called Mahammed by his father who was Mohammed!!!

[III] Shah Abdul Ghani Mujaddidi (1235/1819-1296/1878), Shah Abdul Ghani studied some books of Hadith under his father, Shah Abu Sa’eed, who was a pupil of Shah Abdul Aziz al-Dihlawi, He also studied and obtained Ijazah from Shah Muha*mmad Ishaq al-Dihlawi while still relatively young. His fame as an incomparable scholar of Hadith spread far and wide and scholars and students began to come to study with him from all corners if the then Indian subcontinent as his was the greatest centre of the science of Hadith in India. He is famous for his exegesis on Ibn Majah, known as Injahul Haja which is commonly used as a reference in the teaching of the text until today. Some of his most famous students include Shaikh Muhammad Qasim Nanutwi, Shaikh Rasheed Ahmed Gangohi, Shaikh al-Hind Mahmudul Hasan and Shaikh Muhammad Yaqub Nanutwi.

In the upheaval of 1857 this great institution of the science of Hadith was ravaged by the accidents of time and came to an end for good which left Shah AbduI Ghani very sad and he decided to emigrate to al-Madinah where he served the Sacred Sciences until he passed away and was buried in the graveyard of Baqee alongside the Sahabah in 1296/1878.

Regarding Shah Abdul Ghani, Maulana Hakim Abdul Hayy Lakhnawi writes in Nuzhatul Khwatir: * "Knowledge and practice, asceticism, forbearance, truthfulness, trust*worthiness, chastity, self-preservation, sincerity, resorting to Allah, fear of Allah, conformance to the Prophetic Sunnah, excellent morals, spiritual communion (Muraqaba), benevolence to the people and disinclination to worldly assets; of such qualities he was exclusively the last paragon. Many Ulema and Shaikhs benefited from the blessings of his Majlis and his teachings. All the people of India and Arabia are un*animous as regards his greatness and saintliness."

HIND (INDIA)
In continuing this journey, I now turn to India and the Jamiah of Mazahir al-Uloom in Sahranphur and say that through the blessing of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) I have had the immense honour of sitting with one of the greatest Muhadditheen of our era; Shaikh al-Muhaddith Yunus Jaunpuri al-Mazahiri[i][1] and reading with him the Thulathiyaat[ii][2] of Imam al-Bukhari's Sahih as I also heard the recitation of some Ahadith from the Shaikh while he visited al-Madinah al-Munawarrah[iii][3] and he granted me Ijazah on both occasions.[iv][4]

Shaikh Yunus Jaunpuri al-Mazahiri narrates back to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) through 12 intermediaries and this is the Isnaad:

He narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Mohammed Zakariyyah
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Khalil Ahmed Sahranpuri
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdul Qayyum Budhanwi

[1] He needs no introduction and is known by millions of people worldwide from all backgrounds and madhahib. His students informed me that he has never married and never intends to. When anyone has brought up the subject of marriage he says, "I am married to the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari" Even though I have met hundreds of Ulama and discussed masa'il with many of them, I have never come across a scholar more well-versed in the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari then Shaikh (HA) and he remains an inspiration for all students of Hadith.
[2] Narrations that have only three intermediaries between Imam al-Bukhari (RA) and our Beloved (salahu alayhi wasalam) which make these narrations the pride of Imam al-Bukhari's collection.
[3] May Allah continue to shower his blessings on its most blessed occupant
[4] The main reason that I have presented this Isnaad here before all of the asaneed that I have for the study of the entire Sahih some with the same chain is due to the undeniable position that Shaikh Yunus has amongst his contemporaries for his dedication to Imam al-Bukhari's Sahih.

BURMA
In continuing this journey and moving on to India’s neighbor Burma, I state that through sheer grace of Allah (Subhana wa Ta'ala) I have had the immense honour of sitting with another of Shaikh Mohammed Zakariyyah Kandhalawi’s (RA) students who now resides in al-Makkah al-Mukkaramah, Shaikh Abdus Shakur al-Burmawi. I have travelled to him on numerous occasions and amongst other works that I have studied and obtained Ijazah from the Shaikh in is the Sahih of Imam al-Bukhari (RA) after having read/heard the whole text whilst in his company.[i]

Shaikh Abdus Shakur al-Burmawi al-Mazahiri narrates back to Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani (RA) through 12 intermediaries and this is the Isnaad:

He narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Mohammed Zakariyyah

Who narrates the complete Sahih from Shaikh Khalil Ahmed Sahranpuri
Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abdul Qayyum Budhanwi

[i] The tradition amongst students is that they take turns in reading the text with shoyoukh so on occasions I have read with him and sometimes others would read and I would listen.

Sahih Bukhari & the Highest Isnad of Scholars Worldwide

الحمد لله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، أما بعد:

I thank Allah (A'za wa Jal) for giving me these moments (through illness) in order for me to answer the requests of many of you who would like to be more informed regarding the asaneed (chains of narration) of the major books of Hadith. I had previously touched on this subject in a previous post and in this post I will attempt to provide as many extant auditory asaneed of Imam al-Bukhari's Sahih as I am aware of, starting with those that I have obtained through sitting at the feet of these great Ulama. I warmly welcome your contribution to this thread in order to learn from you, but request that any comments or suggestions be directly related to the subject.

فأبدأ مستعيناً بالله تعالى

First of all, it is worthwhile pointing out that even though there are many paths going back to Imam al-Bukhari (RA) the most commonly used and rigorously accepted path is from the greatest Muhaddith of his era; al-Hafidh, al-Hujjah, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Hajr al-Asqalaani (RA).

It has been established to contain the complete audio transmission of al-Jami al-Sahih from the first Hadith on Niyyah (Intentions) to the last Hadith on the 'two light words upon the tongue' from scholar to scholar all the way back to Imam al-Bukhari (RA).

As we can see below, there are 7 people between Ibn Hajr (RA) and Imam al-Bukhari (RA) and even though there are asaneed with fewer intermediaries it remains to be established whether they have complete auditory transmission of the text.

1. Muhammad ibn Isma’il al-Bukhari (194-256 H)

2. Muhammad ibn Yusuf al-Firabri (231-320 H)

3. Abdullah ibn Ahmad al-Sarkhasi (293-381 H)

4. Abd al-Rahman al-Bushanji (374-467 H)

5. Abul Waqt Abd al-Awwal al-Sijzi (458-553 H)

6. Husain ibn Mubarak al-Zubaydi (545-631 H)

7. Ahmad ibn Abi Talib al-Hajjar al-Hafni (624-730 H)

8. Ibrahim ibn Ahmad al-Tanukhi (709-800 H)

9. Ahmad ibn Ali Ibn Hajr al-Asqalaani (774-852 H)

Now, that we know that, we simply need to trace the asaneed of our shoyoukh back to Ibn Hajr (RA) and the fewer the number of intermediaries going back to him the more elevated the isnaad.

As is tradition amongst Ahlal Athar (People of narration/Hadith), I will start with an Isnaad from a teacher of my birthplace and move through different regions of the world that Allah has blessed me to travel to and obtain asaneed from, with the intention of preserving the Sunnah and this most unique and salient feature that only Muslims can be proud of as no other religion has a system even similar to it.

I start by saying that Allah blessed me with the Taufeeq of sitting at the feet of Shaikh Ahmed Ali Surati (RA) both in England and then in Kuwait and participating in both reading and listening to the complete text of Imam al-Bukhari's Sahih without missing even a single letter and this is his (RA) Isnaad:

20) Shaikh Ahmed Ali Surati (RA)
19) Who narrates the complete Sahih from: Abdur Rahman al-Amrohi
18) Who may[i] narrate a part of it from: Fadlur Rahman Ganjmuradabadi
17) Who narrates a part of it from: Shah Abdul Aziz al-Dihlawi
16) Who narrates to Kitab al-Hajj[ii] from: Shah WaliUllah al-Dihlawi
15) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Abu Tahir Madani
14) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Hasan Ujaymee
13) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Easa Tha'alabi al-Ja'fri
12) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Ahmed ibn Khaleel Subki
11) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Najm Mohammed al-Gheeti
10) Who narrates the complete Sahih from Zakariyyah al-Ansari
9) Who narrates much of the text from Ibn Hajr al-Asqalaani

Which means that between this feeble person and Imam al-Bukhari there are 20 intermediaries which is the highest sanad in the world.[iii] Furthermore, it means that there are only 23 intermediaries between our Beloved Apostle (Salahu alayhi wasalam) and I in the Thulathiyaat[iv] narrations of Imam al-Bukhari (RA)

Insha Allah, in my next post we will continue this journey throughout the world and until next time, I request you all to continue remembering me in your prayers.

Servant of Allah
Mohammed Daniel

[i] It has not been established yet, if Shaikh Abdur Rahman al-Amrohi actually heard any portion of the text.
[ii] Shah Abdul Aziz completed the rest of the text with his father's main student Nurullah Siddeeqi
[iii] This is the highest isnaad in the world that contains auditory transmission in most tabaqaat, however it is not the best in terms of quality owing to the lack of information regarding the 18th and 19th narrators.
[iv] Twenty-two narrations that are regarded as the pride of Imam al-Bukhari compilation as there are only three people between the Beloved (salahu alayhi wasalam) and Imam Bukhari (RA)
