Why some of us need more fat and less protein.

We think we are eating right, low carbs and yet we are not losing? Why? Jimmy Moore is running an experiment on himself because, even though he was eating low carb, he was stalled or even gaining weight. He found he needed lower carbs and protein, and higher fat. I may try to find a meter and strips just to check. It looks like they are expensive, tho. I will let you know what I find out.

This was interesting. I've been wondering if it is possible to eat too little protein or carbs for that matter of fact. I've been at about 75% fat, 20% protein, and 5% carbs daily with my calories coming in around 1650 per day, and I haven't lost any weight now for the past 10 days. It has gone up and down over that time, but no loss from the lowest number.

I do know that it is quite common to not lose weight in the 3rd and 4th week of Atkins while still losing inches. I'm not sure I am losing inches either as I didn't take measurements until two days ago but my clothes don't seem any bigger on me. So, I could just be going through what they call the post induction stall syndrome. I may just be one of thoese people that needs to keep their carbs quite low. Time will tell.

I'm hoping for some movement in the right direction soon. Also, I will be able to determine inch loss in a week or so since I took my measurements a couple of days ago. That will help.

If you're the type of person who developed a weight problem (and you may not be), it would be unusual for you to be able to reach ketosis at 5% of 1650 calories. That's over 80 carbs.

You can definitely eat too much protein and it will ultimately convert to fat if you eat too much of it. It's *always* a point of contention but the general consensus rule of thumb is to eat .7 to 1.0 times your ideal body weight in grams of protein. Drop that carb count down to 20-40 for now.

If you are counting calories, just subtract 400 or 500 kCals from your BMR.

SOOOOoooo, lets just take a hypothetical example:

A 5'4" 35 year old 200 pound sedentary female would have a BMR of about 2000 calories per day.

If that female is wanting to lose weight to 150 pounds quickly AND IS CONCERNED WITH PRESERVING MUSCLE she would eat:
1500-1600 calories a day (BMR - 500)
105-150 g protein (.7 * desired weight)
20-40 grams carbs at first (a low carb amount)

If you don't care about preserving muscle (preserving that muscle is not all good- it DOES make your weight loss take longer), then don't even worry about your protein, just watch the carbs.

My two cents, though :^)

Good job Tony, however it is recommended not to go below 50 grams of protein for a woman that size and for me, I am finding that around 60-70 g protein is good.

Thanks for your input, Tony, but that's 82 calories from carbs. Each gram of carbs has 4 calories, so 82 calories of carbs is actually 20.6 grams of carbs per day which is induction level on Atkins. (That's total carbs as well not net carbs, so my carbs are pretty low.)
