new member needing some help =)

Hi everyone

im just about to embark on my first ever low carb diet.

im a 27year old female 5'2 and weigh 169lbs.

cutting a very long story short.
i have in the years gone by suffered from anxiety and panic disorder, coupled with servere hyperglycemia.

i have won my battle with the anxiety in the sense that i have now learnt to control the symptoms and lead a full happy life.
However for a long time i have wondered why i suddenly was struck with this condition, i had a nervous breakdown but hand on heart i can say i wasnt depressed ... depression followed because of my frustration at the anxiety and panic disorder hitting me out of the blue.

Because i have now suffered for 4 years ive been able to take a logical approach which has helped in overcoming the worse of it.
But i have noticed that hormonal factors and food play a huge part in my symptoms.
and this has lead me to learn that hyperglycemia can mimic and sometimes even aggravate panic disorder.

lately ive been wondering whether a complete overhaul of my diet and lifestyle but just be the key that unlocks the mystery of my sudden decline.
as a teenager i was active in sports i was gymnast for many years and rarely went above a uksize 10 now at 27 im a uksize 18 and now looking at things my decline arrived around the time of my weight gain.

Can a sensitivity to food be a reason for decline in mental health??

im hoping that some pro members here can help me with the question ... is a low carb diet beneficial for hyperglycemia?
the last thing i would want to do is aggravate my already exsiting condition.

i was thinking a hardcore atkins diet would be the right thing to do ... as the typical weightloss is tempting =)
however would anyone advice for or against with my thinking of maybe going for a relativley low carb diet initially.

my diet is currently awful considering the hyperglycemia.
im talking coke crisps chocolate very irratic meal routines sometime none at all.
i will go 14 hours with out eating hit a slump and binge. =(
so could a extreme low carb cause more harm than good.

thank you for taking the time to read

Bobbie, yes..... in short, your diet and lack of proper food could very well be the problem. There are two books you need to read and then research and choose a low carb plan that fits your life, and start as soon as poosible. I think you will see an incredible difference in less than a month. Maybe in the first week or two. Welcome here, we will help as much as we can.

I have no doubt a better diet that helps control your condition will help you quite a bit. Best of luck!

I have seen much anecdotal evidence on other forums that low carb can help depression. I beleive it is the grains, particularly gluten, that can affect the serotonins in the body & brain. Also, the brain needs FATS to function, not carbs, so by cutting carbs and increasing fat you are giving it the right fuel.

Since I gave up gluten in 2005 I am much happier and more positive, and since giving up all grains mid last year I have improved even more. Knock them out of your diet for 2-4 weeks while you are low carbing and see how you feel. You can reintroduce then at controlled levels and know your personal and acceptable limits.
