Default Anxiety
So for the last 4 days I have been experiencing an extreme amount of anxiety, this is day 9 of Ketosis. I normally have GAD but it is never this extreme, I actually had a panic attack one day. My energy level is affecting my ability to even sit for long periods of time and to focus, is this normal in the beginning? Does it eventually even out after I am able to add in more carbs? The energy is wonderful but not the anxiety that is now constant. Any suggestions?

I am eating meats, cheese, butter, olive oil, salad, celery with cream cheese, eggs....the proper menu and am eating my 20 carbs a day. I dont drink anything but water, I had one diet soda in the last 9 days and a couple of random bites of the Atkins bars so I didn't have a breakdown. I also have had some avacado, couple of mini tomatoes and half an artichoke one day.

So is anxiety normal or should I possibly increase my carbs? Has anyone else experienced this?

Anything I'd say on this topic would probably be too controversial - I'll say this: get blood work done, if you can afford it. It's likely a matter that can be taken care of instantly with supplementation.

If you can't afford it, I'd read Vince Gironda's "Unleashing the Wild Physique" in the diet section, or, alternatively, Atkins himself wrote a book called the "Atkins Nutrition Breakthrough". Both books talk about this type of nervous sensation that often accompanies the diet. The problem itself is not so bad - it's the symptom of feeling so bad that is a problem. As it grows, you can actually get nauseous from so much "speedy" energy, and later it can sometimes lead to losing a lot of hair. It's a reversible hair loss, but it's an inconvenience.

It seems based on that diet that you are probably DEEPLY into ketosis. While you don't need to be that deep into ketosis to lose weight, the problem is probably not too little, but too much of something.

Easiest solution: get blood work done.

Yeah I take a plethera of vitamins, B complex, D 6000, C 2000, Multi, Fish oil, and a digestive enzyme. Im actually on this diet to regulate my blood sugar for depression not even for weight loss. I have had neurotransmitter tests along with blood work in the last two months I am low in D and some of my transmittors were off due to being on the birth control pill for my whole life and an allergy to gluten. I had my thyroid checked as well, what other blood test would I do and what would the Dr. need to look for? The depression and lethargy are gone but have been replaced by this other thing.....LOL I dont know whats worse.

I've not heard of this before but if you already had depression that is probably something to do with it. Do you take medication for depression - if so you may find you need to adjust it. My only other suggestion is maybe look to things like potassium, magnesium etc. LC can cause potassium deficiencies as it has a diuretic effect and you are drinking lots of water.

I am by no means an expert and can only go by my own experience. I have found since LCing that I am much less depressed and in general feel much better both mentally and physically. I have had to add magnesium to counter the leg cramps but all in all despite some really very aggrivating life circumstances, I feel really positive and optimistic about things in general. DH and I might both be out of work soon for different reasons and yet it sort of hasn't even phased me and we could end up with not one but two houses in foreclosure if things go in the wrong direction. Before, by now I would have been a loon but for some reason I seem able to cope and just roll with it. I can only attribute this well being to this WOE because nothing else has really changed. Perhaps it is just a matter of "getting over the hump" give it a bit more time and things may change for you. The first few weeks are definitly the hardest and I would hate to see you give up so early in the game.

Cheers my friend and good luck to you!

Yeah I dont want to, I feel overall better, stronger. But I am suffering from the massive anxiety. I was depressed and lethargic before. I feel jittery and unable to focus, even just talking to people is hard for me and I normally don't have a problem with it. I have never been on medication, it has always been manageable but as of now its causing me issues in my college classes. I literally stood through my english class, I couldn't sit still.

I have read that this can even out in time, so I am giving it through the weekend that will put me at my two week mark so I can increase them without any guilt. If I could just harness this energy I would feel better than I have my whole life.

Golly Allie, I will respond to you on your thread...

Tail, Since you are not on this to lose weight but to control your insulin then consider yourself someone who does not need to go into deep ketosis. You should probably up your carbs. However, I am assuming you have a testing meter. Start moving your carbs up, start with say to 30 with more veges and test your glucose. You would be in what Atkins calls Onward Weight Loss or OWL. Here is a list of the foods and how to add them back in.

http://www.atkins.com/Program/Overvi...rb-Ladder.aspx

I think you will see a difference in the long term just because you have stopped grains.

My biggest issue is when I get any kind of energy surge I get anxiety. From caffine, to even alcohol it happens and its been going on for 5 days now, I have had 2 actually panic attacks and the rest of the time I just have the normal nervousness. It is all the energy, even when I workout it is still go go go. But on a side note, I am used to fatigue all the time. My last readings showing early adrenal fatigue and my cortisol levels are very low, I am going to give it another few days and if it doesn't improve then I will increase the carbs by 10. Thank you for listening/reading
