How much exercise a day??

does anyone know how much exercise you should do a day on the atkins? I used to play a lot of squash but now feel very reluctant as fitness plays a vital role in squash, you need a lot of energy. not eating carbs for 9 days is going to have an affect on my playing

I was thinking of eating 2 rounds of wholemeal bread 3 hours before playing? would this be ok?

I haven't had any problems with exercise or sports while eating low carb. I feel that I've performed just as well or better eating this way. You should feel that you have more energy than before. If not, you might be eating something wrong.

You should be able to play normally if you're getting enough calories, carbs and drinking enough water.

How much is enough? Generally, an hour a day is good. More is better. Anything is better than nothing.

You're kidding, right? 2 lbs of bread would be how many carbs? Lots.

I just did a hill-climb that took 45 minutes. My lungs were bursting and my heart rate got to my target, but I ate only spinach, chicken and cheese before I went out. I feel fine.

Dr Atkins said that if you exercise strenuously for 45 minutes 5 days a week, you may be able to eat 60 carbs a day without gaining weight.

I haven't read any limit on the amount of exercise, though.

NO. EATING A LOT OF BREAD BEFORE EXERCISE IS DEFEATING THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF ATKINS.

Exercise, as for me, has only improved since I've been on ATkins.

Your body changes metabolic paths every time it goes into ketosis. Eating bread before exercise is 1) unnecessary and 2) unnecessary.

1) because you can create enough energy and quickly enough burning ketones

2) because you would be throwing yourself out of ketosis. If you burn off more calories than the carbs in the bread had, you'd force your body to convert back to ketosis WHILE you're exercising which is much more exhausting for your metabolism than if it were to have been using ketones the whole time. And besides, your body builds up resistence every time it has to change back INTO ketosis anyway.

Oh yea. And 3) it's unnecessary

Best,
Molley

NO BREAD

Teeppoodiug 01-22-2008 07:31 PM

Carbs - your body's #1 choice for energy
Alcohol - #2
Fat - #3

Eliminate carbs, slow to no alcohol, you burn fat to live, exercise, and whatever else you need. You add bread you mess up the whole thing

okk so let me get this straight:

when you excercise you burn off carbs for fuel first...that means that if I am on induction and I accidentally have 27g carbs instead of 20g, I can excercise so in essence it's like I never crossed the carb limit (and perhaps stalled for a period of time that would be much longer without the excercise?)

i just realised i did 14 days of induction in all pride and enthusiasm only to discover gradually the hidden faux pas (not counting carbs in spices, eating swede for turnips)...I'm hoping my excercise might be of some consolation! http://www.lowcarbsite.com/images/sm...on_redface.gif

Not, not at all.

You're either in ketosis, or you're not. If you're not, it will take time to get back in ketosis and during that time the diet isn't working.

i'm sorry, i didn't understand - if i excercise then my body uses the carbs in my body for fuel, correct? So thats the 27g of carbs, right?

if I happen to excercise enough for it to use up the 27g carbs, then my body switches to eat up any alcohols, right?

and then finally to fat. which means ketosis!

therefore, why am i wrong in saying that if i excercise enough it'll at least burn up the extra carbs i accidentally consumed, if not the alcohols and then the fat? I didnt say it would get me into ketosis. I said it'll speed up the boy's process towards ketosis by eliminating all sources of prior energy (ie carbs and alcohols).

coz when we are in ketosis we are burning fat not carbs
its only 7g of extra carbs dont kill urself over it

I am in desperate need of medical services for my wife that is in need of surgery for a congenital heart problem. She is a wonderful young who right now is extremely scared. I am extremely poor and cannot afford medical services. Are there any programs available for situations like this? I am looking for any information that might be able to steer us in the right direction. If there is anyone out there that can help please help me. Thanks.

I think you're in the wrong place to ask that question, but in case I'm wrong and somebody does have that information, it might help to know where you are located. This board includes people from many different nations and many different states.

If you are in the US, I'd get on the telephone and contact social services or your local hospital and see what they recommend.
