I don't know if this is in the nail technician realm or not but...

Is there anything I can do for a fingernail that is just very odd shaped? I have grown my fingernails out and they are beautiful but I have one that is just shaped weird. It curves up on one end and flat like it is supposed to be on the other.

I have a few clients whose nails grow 'wavy' or curl after a certain length. You can't really stop it, how your nails grow is predetermined in the matrix aka nail bed, which lies just behind that 1/2 moon you can generally see on your nails underneath the cuticle. Trauma to the nailbed and matrix can result in changing the growth pattern resulting in ingrowns, splitting when past the free edge, thickening of the nail, or curves/waves.

I told Kim to play around with nail shapes and lengths, the longer nails get, the more likely you are to get breaks, stress points at the free edge... especially since women treat their nails like tools.


These are common nail shapes and lengths; if you want to keep the length I'd recommended trying (a)rounded, (b)oval or (g)squound (square with rounded edges).. Squound looks the best and help 'disguise' wavy/curves in the nail.

Depending where the nail starts to curve may be your cut off length unfortunately. Hope that helps

as a younger person, i had pronounced half moons at the tip of each nail, now they are smaller, pale and irregular in shape....my mother always told me they were a reflection of healthy calcium levels, but my mother told me lots of strange things

Sure can! It's proper name is lunula, most people call it the 1/2 or 1/4 moon of the nail (Guyser was half there). As I was telling Ab's, just beyond that viable part of the nail is the matrix of the nail. It's also refereed to the root of the nail. This area is generally more plump and different in color, ranging from white to a soft peachy pink, I've found clients whose lunula was closer to white, had fairly strong nails... which makes sense since that area is where the keratin forms and is stored to grow nails.

It's generally visible only on the thumbs in adulthood; although some people can view their all throughout their life. It's considered fashionable if it can be seen on every finger.

Any suggestion(s) to a friend's chronic problem with her Big toe nails always ending up broken and surrounding areas bruised/reddened after a marathon ? Her Big toe nails always gets detached a few days after the run.

Any nail protection/ strengthener,vitamins u might recommend? Ta

If she stops running he toe nails will stop falling off. Seriously... Likely her shoes are too small or too big, I've a few runners & tennis players for clients and they always have trouble with bruised nails or loss there of, always the big or 2nd toe from the trauma received from impact against the end of the shoe. She either needs to get fitted for shoes at a sports supply store by a professional, or stop running. She's pretty much SOL though likely.
