Look what I found!!

http://badhairday.typepad.com/bad_ha...of_love_i.html

but it sounds like they probably use the money to make the wigs!??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locks_of_Love
Locks of Love has received criticism for its practice of selling donated hair, rather than using it in wigs as the donors expect. They refer to the hair they sell as "unusable material," but the buyers are using it to make wigs. According to a 2003 report by the Better Business Bureau’s Wise Giving Alliance, in 2002 alone Locks of Love had raised over $150,000 by selling donated hair and had received another $213,000 in charitable contributions and grants, but provided only 113 human-hair wigs.
Locks of Love representatives are frequent guests on The Oprah Winfrey Show and other daytime television shows, where they provide haircuts to guests and audience members. Though the representatives and show hosts normally suggest that the hair collected during the show will go into a wig, that the wigs are given free of charge to children with cancer, neither of these outcomes is guaranteed. [3][4][5] The organization was formed to help people with the illness of alopecia, not necessarily to help cancer patients.[5]
[edit] Accountability standards

The BBB 2010 report now lists Locks of Love as a reputable charity. The Better Business Bureau report issued July 2008 states that Locks of Love does not meet its standards for charity accountability because the organization did not accurately report the charity's expenses in its financial statements despite requests for that information.[6] The Better Business Bureau reports that Locks of Love made $352,401 from "unusable material sales".[7]

wait - locks of love charges for their wigs???

thanks Audraa!!

I think it may grow a whole inch...but oh my god is it really worth it?!

I think not. I think I'm going to make a hair appointment tomorrow!

But I will still probably try that Biolage. It sounds nice to have in your hair
They were caught doing it. Not sure how long ago, but that's why the place I went to didn't go through them anymore.

From what I found out is that they sold the excess hair they didn't need, but IMO they could have given it to another charity. Plus how could you not need all the hair donated?! There's so many kids out there that can use it.

Ninety percent of the children who apply for wigs through Locks of Love have a disease called alopecia areata. Others have trichotillomania, a disorder that leads them to pull out their hair compulsively. Some have suffered burns or trauma, even dog bites. Others have been in car accidents and lost their scalps. Only 3 percent are bald because of cancer, and they usually have had radiation treatment to the brain stem or are on chemotherapy indefinitely. But most cancer patients are not eligible for Locks of Love wigs because their hair will grow back when their chemotherapy ends.

Okay, enough technical stuff there. In 2002, LoL received enough hair to make approximately 10,000 hairpieces. What a huge difference this would make to those under 18 with hair loss. Yet give.org cites they only made 113 wigs from human hair in that same year along with 61 other pieces for a total of 174 hairpieces. Where did the other 9,826 potential hairpieces go? Also, according to give.org, LoL does not open their financial records to the public like any reputable charity should. They have since remedied this as of 2007.

Many times hair that is cut never actually reaches Locks of Love. The average American female uses many cosmetics on her hair, and uses heated devices on her hair everyday which damage and weaken the hair making it unfit for wigs anyhow. TheCharity Navigator site reports that LoL has provided only 1000 wigs since its inception (date not given - but it first registered as a nonprofit in 1997). LoL reports that it receives over 2000 donations of hair through the mail each week an equal amount from hair salons. http://www.squidoo.com/locksoflove

I can understand that they can't use all the hair, but this definitely decides me! I am going to get my hair done now!!

Pantene Beautiful Lengths, started in June 2006, has received 18,000 ponytails and distributed 2,000 wigs to women with cancer, a number that matches Locks of Love's work since 1997. One company does the work in one year that another company does in nearly 10.

There are other places salons donate to. Call around.
The one I did was for cancer kids. Sorry like I said I can't remember the name and I can't find my certificate. I'm terrible when it comes to remember these things lol.

there's even that place I had found when the oil spill happened that takes hair and uses it to sop up oil from oil spills!

At one time, my hair was down below my butt. I have very thick hair too. I never had any issues with tangling such as you have. Other than my hubby when we were in bed.

Do you get a lot of new hair growth at the nape of your neck? Or hair that never seems to get as long as the rest? That's the only reason I can see having tangling issues. I mean.... I had stragglers underneath.... but they never caused any trouble.

That would be a drag.

I used to be able to sit on my hair when I was younger. I can't grow it too long now cos otherwise it just annoys me (and Zorak sleeps on it when we share a bed and I can't move).

I have really thick hair and used to keep it really long. I used to have this same problem. Like serious knots that took forever to get out. Biolage is certainly a good product, but I use a spritz Pantene leave-in conditioner, and I love it. If you choose that, tho, be careful where you spray it, because for some reason it makes the floor exceptionally slippery.

You know I actually do have a lot of new growth all along my hair line. I have all these "baby hairs"

Yeah people who say long hair is sexy must know how to maneuver themselves more than I can

Well I cut it all off today !!!

I'm waiting for it to behave so I can take pictures. It just looks like a bad bowl cut right now.

Hopefully I get some cute pics this weekend
