Hi Everyone!
I am a 41 year old active healthy bloke and I have had amazing success doing Atkins before (5 years ago I lost about 3.5 stones). I am currently on day 21 and to date I have lost only 1.3 Kg! I cannot understand it at all! My daily intake consists of:- 1 or 2 Tins of Tuna (in sunflower oil) with mayonnaise for breakfast. A couple of beef sausages or rashers for lunch (not a big eater during the day). Grilled Chicken (KFC style) with loads of salad (Iceberg lettuce, peppers, onions, grated carrot) and some mature cheddar grated over it all. I got so, so sick of fry ups that this is what I have been eating every day. I have 3 or 4 cups of coffee a day with full cream milk and Splenda and I drink about 4 litres of Pepsi Max (I'm an addict and cannot resist!). I also am a keep fit noob and I run (not jog) 4 miles on alternate days, I cycle and also go to the gym for weight training (have NOT done enough for muscle growth yet though!). Why am I not losing weight? Is there something that I am doing that is scuppering the diet? The only thing that has changed since I did the Atkins 5 years ago is the amount of excercise I do now, 5 years ago it was minimal. Thanks in advance! Gary |

Hello and welcome!
There are a few things I can see that you might want to question. The KFC-type grilled chicken. Is that actual KFC chicken, or do you make it yourself? What's in it? How many carbs are in your loads of salad? Also, carrots aren't allowed. Another issue is that you seems to be eating all of your carbs at this one meal. That can cause an insulin spike... try eating your carbs (veggies) throughout the day. The Pepsi Max... I'll assume it's diet. If not, THAT is your issue. If it is diet, it may still be your issue. Some diabetics say that excessive sf products can (and does) effect their insulin needs. Because the exercise isn't something new (since you started Atkins) I doubt that's effecting your wt loss. What's in the sausage? Is there sugar in your rashers (bacon, right?)? Some sausages have fillers... grains.... and are quite high in carb. How much water are you drinking? This is absolutely critical to your success. If you're not drinking water... start. Fast. Last question... how close are you to your goal weight? If you don't have a lot to lose, you're going to lose it slowly. I'm talking as slow as you're losing right now. Even slower. Hope this helps! Tril |

Gary,
I was never a big water drinker but found after starting Atkins, that IF I don't drink enough I: (1) get "bottled up" quite badly and (2) don't lose as well. I forced myself to drink water and after a few weeks it became second nature. Still, if I don't THINK about it, I only do about a litre and I need 2. How about actually INCREASING your food intake, by adding a serving of yummy low-carb veggies like broccoli, cauliflower or spinach? The first two are great with butter and cheese, and spinach or any variety of greens (collards, kale, turnip) is good American Southern style simmered in chicken broth with bacon. The body needs something tangible to work off. I added flax to keep problem #1 at bay. I couldn't believe it often made a total difference of 2 pounds, thanks to the accompanying bloating! Who would have thought... Good luck and let us know what works for you! Toni |
