Default Atkins vs Low carb
How many are following Atkins or just a low carb diet? If your doing just low carb how many carbs a day do you allow yourself? And do you eat fruit?

Just not sure how strict I want to go with this.

Thanks,

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Welcome!

I really needed the control in the beginning until I understood what and why things happened. I started on Atkins, the New Atkins for a New You, the newest version. Others here started on the older ones, but I wanted to keep my coffee! LOL

After I lost most of my weight, and had climbed most of the rungs, I made several decisions based on research I had done and am now doing high fat low carb HFLC and some days of very low carb VLC. What ever you chose, track what you are eating and your progress. It is critical to know what is helping and what is hurting.

I too have been following the latest Atkins plan.

I like the structure and guide lines of the plan.

After a little over a year, I am still on OWL typically nuts, berries, beans and occasionally eating higher rung items eg high end chocolate pieces, a slice of pizza, a couple tacos, or burritos (rice?!). I seldom have bread, rice, potatoes or noodles. I have lost about 40. I still have about 30 pounds to lose. Although I do not count my carbs religiously, I am around 40-50 net carbs per day. I must admit, I am living more of a maintenance than a weight-losing WOE.

I personally found that having fruit in the house is bad as I will eat a large amount at once. I do have the occasional bite or two.

I have never found the diet to be very restrictive. It just means I am making conscious choices about what I eat. I could eat meat and salad every day and be quite happy.

Reading the forums, I notice that many women seem to need to be closer to the starting net carb range (20-30) to lose weight.

I started with Atkins (2002 version) 7 years ago, lost 29.5 kgs in 5 months, had a car accident and fell off the wagon. Last August I came back (I had regained 20 or so of those lost kgs!) and restarted with Atkins but am now following what is called the Primal Blueprint as I eat NO grains at all. PB allows you aup to 150g carbs a day but I try to stay between 20-50, as I still have a lot of weight to lose.

I am doing ATKINS and also have the book which Arlene started with A NEW ATKINS FOR A NEW YOU! The guidelines are clearly set up and I am never hungry. I don't eat any grains whatsoever, no fruit YET, lots of green vegetables, eggs and fish and meat. It is a WOE (way of eating) that I can live with for the remainder of my life. I seldom go over 15 carbs per day. I lose slowly but I fit into all my clothes and many are loose this summer, so it is all good! I walk a lot and swim every day during the summer.

Good luck.

I'm basically following the 2002 Atkins. The only change I have made is that instead of 65% of my calories from fat, I shoot for 75%. I keep my carbs at about 20 -23 per day. I love it and love what I am eating.

I cycle. Atkins is the fastest way to lose weight and "cut", but I work out so sometimes I use a similar diet (Vince Gironda's) that allows my muscles to be bigger faster.

Depends on what you're trying to do!
