If you are still hungry, fill up on veggies. They are your friends.

Default Any tips for a newbie?
Hello:

I am beginning my induction period tomorrow. As per the direction of phase 1, I am to eat eggs, meats and cheese for the first three weeks and after that begin to introduce vegetables and nuts.

Any tips or suggestions for a newbie? They would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

hey all, i need some advice, ive been following a low carb diet for 8 days now. usually end up between 30-50g of carbs a day, i have ketostix which have always turned pink, from very faint, to quite dark. i know i am in ketosis, and i plan on staying here for another 3 weeks.
my question is:
can i eat 50-70g of carbs spread evenly through out the day and stay in ketosis?
i notice i seem to get a bad headache and mood swing about every 3-4 hours. but if i have around 10-15g of carbs it goes away and i feel much better. does this lifft me out of ketosis? (my stix say it doesnt) or is it just giving my brain the glycogen it requires to function propely? and also every 3-4 hours can i eat 10-15g of carbs? and stay happily in ketosis, lose fat but provide just enough carbs for my brain to function properly? i understand after 3 weeks my brain should use upto 75% ketones for energy but currently i am assuming it isnt and if i constantly top it up, would this prevent my brain from swiching over successfully.
sorry many questions, any help appreciated.

Dunno about staying in ketosis, but you don't NEED carbs for your brain to function, your brain is the most important organ to your body so it has mechanisms in place to fuel the brain even if you eat no carbs at all. I would suggest your headache etc. is withdrawal symptoms - the best cure is NOT to give in to them, as if you do they will never go away.
30-50g of carbs is not very low carb so your stix may be giving you false results? I don't know, I don't use them, Tril will know

i was under the impression anything below 100g of carbs a day was considered a low carb diet.

your brain does need glycogen to function. and if its not getting a little from carbs it has to get it from protein being converted. after 3 weeks or so some studies have said that 75% can be from ketones, but still 25% is from glycogen.

as you said carbs are not an essential nutrient, but can be a simple source of glycogen preventing some protein being converted.

i had thought about the withdrawal, but am i getting withdrawal from carbs? ive been dieting so long i cant have it from sugar etc. (i know sugar is a carb).

also i do 4-5 weight sessions a week, although not as intense as normal since i started this diet. usually 18 sets across 2 muscle groups per session, im guessing a 200-300 calories being used. also try to get 10-20 steep incline walking burning 150-300 calories. so averaging 500-600 a session.

yes under 100g is low, but not very low. Atkins recommends 20g or less to start with .
You should not have a problem with getting all the glycogen you need - that's the reason fro eating plenty of protein and fat on this diet, to help you convert to using it and so that you never have to use your own muscle protein. So you don't have to worry about 'preventing some protein form being converted', anyway most of your ketones come from fat conversion and this is part of how it works - your brain needs fuel and you have loads of it stored away, but if you keep giving it 'easy' fuel it won't get on and hunt out the fat to convert.
I bet you are getting carb withdrawal because most people do. The symptoms seem classic - feel ill, eat the thing you are addicted to, feel better for a bit, then feel ill again. You just have to go through the bad part - read the posts about 'Atkins 'flu'
Post some of your daily menus, people will help

definately will read it now!

atkins is not the diet i am following though. my diet is more 10% carbs (50g but generally end up at 30-40 most days), 200g+ protein and about 160g of fat.
i know the diet is working, i have lost 2kg i a week after previously only losing 0.5kg a week. i know some of its water. physically everyday my fat seem to be dissapearing. i am happy with it so far. but i am more interested in knowing about the ketosis and people experience is staying in it and how many carbs seem to throw them out of it.
ive read lots of websites about this diet and they all recomend 30-50g to stay in ketosis and only atkins says 20 and even thats not permanant. also i only plan on followng this particular diet for a total of a month, so around 3 more weeks, after which i am going to switch to a cylce ketongenic diet allowing carbs friday night to satuday night, and lots of them.
i assumed since this website was called lowcarb site it would cater for the various different version of the low carb diets and provide extra first hand experience of people problems and how they over came it.
also eating 200g of veggies even the right ones still have around 8-12g of carbs.

P.S most of my carbs do come from my veggies in the evening, or the 50g of mayo a day i have with my tuna. works out 3.5g of carbs in the mayo at 50g (low fat version).

my average days intake is as follows so far.

1 sausage, and 250g of scrambled egg for breakfast. (6g in sausage, 3-4g in the scrambled egg)

can of tuna, + 40-50g of mayo light (3.5g)

after gym, protein shake, (3.8g)

dinner, large amount of chicken, beef, fish etc, with veggies and some cheese. (usually ends up at 12-14g for veggies, 1-3g for meats)

sugar free jello pot

1 glass of sugar free soft drink, i.e pepsi max etc

snacks include boiled eggs little carbs, cheese and pate (2g per 100g), salmon pate and lettuce.

i am very aware about what goes into to my body, and i dont have more then 10-15g of carbs entering at a meal. its pretty spread across the day.

I'm not doing Atkins either but most people here are.
I'm interested in this 'cycle ketogenic diet' can you give a link? I'd like to know how it works.
For someone working out a lot, you don't seem to be eating much. Of course I don't know how large you are or how much weight you need to lose

ya its low. but not every day, when i go gym its slighty higher. id send you a link but it probably be easier to google it. there is lots of websites for it. and its a muscle building diet. but it will basically allow you to not put much fat on at all but gain masses which is what its all about.

im simply trying to get to a single digit bodyfat at the moment. todays intake of carbs will be 30, and just checked and im in the middle of the ketostix so its definately working well

Yes - don't tell anyone you are doing this, they will drive you mad with 'advice'. Mostly they will tell you it will kill you.
Also it can get pretty boring with no veg at all - you can eat loads of very low carb veg like celery and most salad ingredients and also then your meals look more 'normal' to other people
Always carry a snack when you are out - there isn't anything you can buy to eat unless you pass a butchers shop!
Keep us posted

My tip would be not to give up! The temptation to do so will come - especially in the first week with all the withdrawals - but keep at it! It is so worth it.

My #1 advice... read read read, learn learn learn. Question everything, find your own truth.

Also... be willing to try new foods, incorporate vegetables into your low carb lifestyle, learn from your mistakes, accept that you're human and will make mistakes, remember that weight loss is neither predictable nor linear, work on WHY you gained weight and what that means to you, start preparing for maintenance now, exercise for strength and stress relief, expect setbacks, don't give up, use non-food rewards, don't underestimate the importance of drinking water every day, search out and accept support, ask questions, set realistic goals... and accept no less than your best effort from yourself.

That about covers it. LOL

Welcome and good luck!
