Default Should I go to a doctor?
This might be a little squeamish for some people but...

I managed to get cuts on the sides of both my feet on Sunday, from wearing really shite flip flops. No bother, put some plasters on them and carried on.

The right foot is fine, healing over, but I'm worried the left foot has become infected even though I cleaned both of them out and have tried to keep them that way till they healed. Today, even sitting still my left foot is throbbing with pain. Not really bad, but it's in the background. And when I changed the plaster earlier, there was some yellow liquidy stuff and that part of my foot feels a little swollen and hot.

I don't go to the doctor much, because I don't get sick very often, so I'm reluctant to go for a graze. If I wait this out and just keep it clean, will my foot drop off or will it probably be fine?

Darkcgi has offered some good suggestions, I would also recommend putting some Neosporin on it.

Kiss that foot goodbye. It was a good run while you had it, but it's most certainly a goner.

Either that, or it will clear up in a few days and you'll be fine.

I'm with CGI on the peroxide. Maybe not squeezing though, I'd be afraid of irritation, But maybe he's right.

After some thought I don't think squeezing the puss out is a great plan either. You can run the risk of a staph infection, and those are both contagious, and can be deadly.

If it happened Sunday and you're still having problems, go get it checked out.

Infections are nothing to dick around with.

Better safe than sorry and perhaps loose a foot to boot.

First off are you diabetic? If you are then you should know the importance of taking care of your feet. Or does diabetis run in your family?

My dad was diabetic and lost a toe to a infection in it. Spent a month in the hospital on top of that.

Initially wash with mild soap and water.

I agree with darkcgi re: his suggestion and Darrell's Neosporin

However, one can't do as much as possible cleansing with Hydrogen Perixide as that's a drying agent! When skin dries too much it becomes cracked more--- hence increasing your wound bed. Too much cleansing too destroys the normal healing epithelials/cells thus decreasing healing process. Do it about 2-3 times per day.

B4 u clean with Peroxide, it's okay to squeeze the pus out. Make sure though what you've used to squeeze it out- a glove or a gauze- don't re-use or place it back on the wound to prevent recontamination.

Cleanse with Peroxide, air it out----> make it bubble as that's oxygen activating the cleansing agent in the solution.
Wipe dry with clean gauze. Direction of wiping is from clean to dirty or center of wound outwards. This prevents contamination or returning back the bacteria to the wound. Or pat dry one time.
Apply Neosporin
Cover with telfa or non sticking/ adherent pad.

Hope you heal soon.

U have some good avdvice here. But in answer to your original question. If your concerned about anything. See a doctor regardless. They will know better than us. Especially as we can't see it.

I'm not diabetic, the only diabetes in my family is type 2 old age diabetes so I'm not at risk for it.

Part of the problem is probably the fact that it's on my foot, right on the side, and I walk about 40 minutes in total a day so that can't be helping things heal up when I'm moving about.

I've come home and smothered it in antiseptic after cleaning it gently again, if there's no improvement in the morning then I'll have to get a doctors appointment!

Although I do have some amoxicillin upstairs

I don't go to the hospital often, but when I go because something doesn't feel right, there was always something wrong that required medical attention.

Took me a week to go in because of my hand, and at first, they didn't find anything. The third time in since it had swelled like a balloon and the fact that I was in tears, they had to operate because of the infection (they literally took me to the OR that same day). The doctor said if I would of waited another day, I would of lost the hand.

The quicker you get in the better.

People in the medical profession are no longer recommending people use hydrogen peroxide to clean a wound. There's other stuff that's much safer today.

As far as the original question... ya I would recommend you go. Gangrene or blood poisoning are both nasty nasty things to get.

Not being able to see the wound, I recommend an Epsom salt foot soak a few times a day to draw out the infection. Moist wounds heal faster so keeping something like neosporin on it will help. I learned years ago that before the advent of Neosporin, the remedy was raw honey. I keep raw honey (manukka) if I can find it. It is interesting because the exudate from the wound mixes with the honey and the reaction creates hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Honey has been proven to have antimicrobial properties. There is some process with the honey that binds the oxygen free radicals produced by the H2O2 reaction and the antioxidant effect of the honey neutralizes them.

Sounds crazy? Significant research has demonstrated the efficacy of raw honey (and specifically that honey from the manuka blossom) and it's healing properties and also more importantly it's effectiveness in the healing of wounds infected with a drug resistant strain of bacteria called Methicillin Resistant Staphlococcus Aureus -MRSA. Many hospitals have begun to use wound dressings impregnated with manuka honey.

Should you go to the doc? None of us could say...post a pic and that will help the internet diagnosis.

As an aside-
The best remedy for sore throat discomfort-1tsp raw honey, tsp apple cider vinegar(the cloudy kind like Braggs) and 1 tsp hot water.....gargle for 30 seconds and repeat..aaaaah, instant relief plus there are the healing properties of honey coating the back of your throat.

Well, I cleaned it out thoroughly last night and slathered it in antiseptic cream and a plaster, did the same again this morning and halfway through the day and I think there's definite improvement

For example, yesterday I was limping because it hurt to put pressure on my foot, and now I can walk and it's just a mild discomfort like the sort you might expect when there's a wound on something that moves a lot.

My foot is still red across the top and itches, but apparently that's my body fighting the infection.

Since it hurts dramatically less today, I'm going to take that as a good sign.

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it
