Side Effects of Rapid Weight Loss

Do you know that rapid weight loss isn't good for the overall health? If you don't, then read on to know more why you shouldn't do that an average person can only lose 1 - 2 pounds of weight a week. Anything more than that is possible with supplements, and diet programs but there has got to be some side effects such as:

Muscle Loss
Rapid weight loss oftentimes associated with muscle loss. If the body doesn't get enough nutrients it resorts to eating away at the muscles for energy. Fat isn't an effective source of energy and the body only considers it as a reserve as a last resource. If you lose muscles it results to slow metabolism, which will make the person regain the weight once he or she eats normally.

Dehydration
The muscle is greatly made up of water so if you lose the muscles, you also lose the water reserve in the body. We all know that dehydration isn't good as it can cause lack of energy, diarrhea, dizziness, vomiting, and kidney stones.

Gallstones
Long period of fasting and rapid weight loss can cause imbalance of cholesterol and bile salts in the gallbladder that leads to gallstone formation that may need surgery to remove. Gallstones causes bloating, nausea, vomiting, and severe pain in the upper abdomen, between the shoulder blades and in the lower back.

Hair Loss
This is common in rapid weight loss because protein is usually reduced to a small percentage of the diet. Protein deficiency will lead to brittle hair, and eventually hair loss.

Loose Skin
If you lose weight rapidly, the skin will definitely sag as it doesn't have enough time to adapt to the changing body. It is oftentimes visible in the tummy and the arms.

This is a great article mikaela! I'm sure that many of the dieters will understand why it is not advisable to lose weight fast. It's also a wakeup call to everyone that rapid weight loss isn't good for our overall health. Loose skin is the most common and I have seen it on so many people.

I agree with dehydration and muscle loss. As much as we want to lose weight fast, we have to take the side effects into consideration. The reason why should we want to lose weight is to be healthier and not cause our body more damage.

My best friend actually lost some of her hairs when she lost a lot of weight in a short period of time. Her skin was also dry and sagging and she had to work out hard and drink plenty of water to rehydrate her body. This article should warn us of the bad effects of losing weight fast. So taking the weight loss slowly and surely is the best way to do it. Glad you like it http://www.dietforums.com/images/smilies/smile.png

Really? Oh my that isn't good if she lost some of her hairs. She must have taken the diet too much to cause that. I think I did experience some dizziness when I was starting with my own diet program. Maybe it was because I was fighting the craving and the smoking together

Cheaperisdeeper 09-30-2010 03:11 PM

I think it's from the smoking that causes you dizziness. And I think you need to eat healthier since you are smoking. Is it true that you lose weight then you smoke? I heard from a friend that she lost weight because of drinking too much coffee and smoking.

Honestly, it does help in weight loss but shouldn't be considered as a way to lose weight because it isn't good. Nicotine is an appetite suppressant so you eat less. It also increases the metabolic rate because smoking makes your heart beat faster so your body expends more energy and burn more calories.
